I have no problem with Friday Night is Music Night being resurrected on Radio 3 - but Three hours of Tom Service plus Jools Holland as far as I can see copying This Classical Life for older interviewees and an extended This Classical Life is grim for a Saturday ,

I understand one of Mr Jackson's excuses for Record Review is that more people now listen to the programme after it is broadcast online . Well the reason for that is clear - Record Review as a whole is in decline having become the Andrew McGregor show with no room it seems for anyone who does not agree with him about recordings .

If they had brought back Interpretations on Record that might have been a solace- I see historically there was one from Ida Haendel on BrahmsVC !

And yes although my French is limited I probably learned and enjoyed more about The Pearl Fishers from a Jardin des Critiques the other year than from most BALs.

I can absolutely imagine that a little French would go a long way with La Tribune and would heartily recommend any curious listeners give it a try. There are lots of episodes available to listen to on the France Musique site. Critic-ese doesn’t have an enormous vocabulary in any language and they play pretty substantial extracts (since that’s all the critics actually hear of the recordings what with them being unidentified). If you can keep track of the versions and make a few notes you can do the whole exercise for yourself!

I did have a problem a while back listening to a couple of episodes as podcasts, though, since there was so much compression that all the recordings suffered a bit and some quite new recordings ended up sounding ancient…

I’m pretty sure I heard that particular programme as well, although having had the Otter for ages, the one I marked down for future reference was conducted by Cluytens. Don’t remember who was singing. Unlikely to have been Mrs Cluytens.
I'm afraid they didn't care for Upshaw's 'dodgy' french. The Cluyten's has Marta Angelici, they didn't like her 'old-fashioned' voice.

I also have Sandrine Piau on what I think was her first recording, on Timpani 1c1045, which is the version with piano, and all Delage, and is well worth having.

And there is another lovely thing about the programme: they play enough even of the recordings that fall at the first hurdle for me to make up my own jolly mind!

I was just thinking how tempting that Piau sounds and suddenly had the strong suspicion that I might already have it somewhere in a dark corner of my shelves…

I bet BAL goes down to 30 mins or disappears completely. At 30 mins it’s barely worth doing.

I feel that the sky is about to fall in - most depressing thing I've read in aeons. Much as the move to "twofers" has, on balance, not been a success, a move to Saturday afternoons sounds like the death knell. Woe, woe, and thrice woe.

Yes, I do that a lot. When something comes on the radio, say, I picture the cover and can't quite remember if I have it in my collection or used to have it in the CD shop that I ran!

You at least have the excuse of having run a CD shop…

With just a 2 hour slot for the whole thing something has to give. I fear they may kill off BaL, but the other possibility is we'll lose 45 min of reviews, not to mention Extra. How many new releases in a challenging market will then never be showcased on national radio? This would hurt the small labels especially, who must get a significant boost from being featured here. Whatever they do, I imagine listening figures will drop substantially in the afternoon slot, which also means less exposure. It's almost as if they didn't think through the consequences of trashing something that has served us well since 1957 just to give us 3 hours of Tom Service...

I was born in 1957 - clearly a great year for broadcasting. This cannot be allowed to stand…
