I agree on both points, verismissimo.

I can't really say whether I agree with the choice or not, since I haven't heard the whole recording, and it's impossible to judge from the snippets on this programme. I still prefer a tenor. Interesting to hear the Peter Schreier snippet.

Winning version "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon, tho' various cheaper options from across the pond. I liked what I heard of it.

Vaguely lurking at the back of my mind is the idea that there does exist a BBC archive recording of Sophie Wyss singing Marine and Being Beauteous, the first two songs to receive a public performance. Is this possible? Surely it would have been mentioned.

Mary: I think we were told pretty firmly that there was no Wyss recording. Of course, we can always hope that Auntie has something hidden away somewhere, and sometimes we'll be right, but we seemed to be offered no grounds for belief.

YouTube does have some samples of her art, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Fs7H4LWvdQ
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

There is such a recording, with Henry Wood conducting - I was sure that it, too, was on Youtube until recenly, or featured on a recent BBC4 programme, perhaps?

As it isn't generally (?at all?) available, it's not that surprising it wasn't mentioned/illustrated this morning.

                Moderately illuminating.

A piece which definitely favours the soprano voice; Pears, unique insights etc, notwithstanding.

Maybe my favourite Britten vocal work. I'm very happy with the recording that I've owned for quite a few years now - Phyllis Bryn-Julsen, Steuart Bedford , English Chamber Orchestra, Collins.

I think it's Flott ackchewelly. PBJ sings Our Hunting Fathers.

Also, happy with Flott, RSNO,Thomson on Chandos. In fact, about to give it a spin!

And the Collins disc is being spun in the Beef Oven! household!!

Edit: Is it Lott? I can't put my hands on the CD, just listening on my iTunes library where the Naxos metadata comes up instead and says Lott.

Ah, thanks. You edited your post as I was listening. I thought my CD was Bryn-Julien. but I can't tell because there is no Collins metadata coming up.

I'll take your word for it!!

One of the downsides of browsing Twitter - the Twits at R3 "spoiled" the outcome of this BAL which I wanted to listen to 'blind' tomorrow morning
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

After the HP fiasco, would be as well to use the spell checker, Cals.

... not ruined, just impaired. Don't these people know some of their audience don't listen live and actually use their much-trailed 'catch up' / podcast facility??

                              And.... relaaaaaaax

I've just played the Jill Gomez performance with the Endymion Ensemble that's coupled with Felicity Palmer's Phaedra and Five French Folksong Arrangements on Decca and I feel the Felicity Lott is better. I will dig up the Pears and the Ainsley CDs later, but I prefer female voices in this work.
