I have Blomstedt/SFS one and Myun wyun Chung and I was wondering the Oramo? Essential then?

It is astonishing that Lenny's Nielsen 3 and 5 are out of the catalogue ( albeit a great deal less astonishing that his Nielsen 2 is missing ) . I see Sony are putting out a box of his New York Sibelius recordings this summer - perhaps his Sony Nielsen will follow .

I love the Blomstedt BBM but the Oramo is tempting judging by his recent live Nielsen .

David Patrick Stearns' very amusing & stimulating Collection feature for 3/2015 Gramo was nothing if not quirky - in prose style and conclusions... his choices were:

          "Vocal Choice": Gothenburg SO/Jarvi (DG).
          "Operatic Choice": Odense SO/Serov (Kontrapunkt)**
"Extreme Choice": Royal Danish SO/Bernstein (Sony) "After listening, you may end up feeling as sweaty as Bernstein...".

Top Choice was NYPO/Gilbert on Da Capo. Stearns says that Oramo would have been a top contender save for his "in-and-out-of-focus first movement".
I disagree. Strongly. For me, Oramo's a head or two ahead of Gilbert, but I love both.

** Layton dismissed this release unequivocally..."uncompetitive... a disappointment" etc., 11/95.
Nielsen always does divide the critics...

The Fifth is truly stunning as a performance- but the Espansiva is absorbing too, and with a Danish orchestra that knew it inside out.

I've just discovered this on the shelves (complete with rather twee watercolour by HRH Prince Charlie on the cover) - the re-mastered sound in the 3rd is indeed pretty fabulous. Although I'm not wholly convinced by Lenny's slightly free way with tempi, he clearly loved the music - and, as Makropoulos says, the orchestra is audibly on home ground so gives its impressive all. Very glad to have re-acquainted myself with this performance.

I went to Oramo's performances of 5 & 6 at the Barbican, and they were terrific, but I was a little bit disappointed with his recording of 3.with the Royal Stockholm PO Among others I have recordings by Chung, and Gilbert with the NYPO, but it's Bernstein that I most often return to. Tuxen's version from 1946 with the Danish State RSO is splendid in spite of the dated sound.

One feels the winner may be Danish?

                          Nielsen, I'd say.

Gothenburg / Chung. Not noticeably Danish!
