      School holidays, innit!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The 'foreign' reading that most caught my ear was Oramo's - I REALLY trust him in Elgar (the Enigma referred to by akiralx earlier in this thread, with the CBSO, is my absolute favourite of all) - as you say ferns, that Swedish reading sounded very interesting to me - superbly played and the sort of orchestral recording sound I love.

And I have all the Elder/Hallé Elgar discs except the Second Symphony - I trust them too.

So subject to hearing the 'winner' again on Monday, it's Oramo and Elder that won this for me.
Well I'm sautéing the above with garlic and seasoning, and reaching for the knife and fork...

Using the 'sample' facility afforded by the iTunes Store (which allows you to listen to a minute, sometimes 90 seconds, of each track), and listening via the AE on the big hi-fi, I've just compared the Oramo, Elder and Barenboim performances, listening to a chunk of each movement of each reading.

With the benefit of an level sonic playing-field, and a superior one to the DAB radio on which I listened to BaL, I'd have to revise my view.

The Barenboim sound and performance seem MUCH the most involving, indeed thrilling, of the three. The recording is 'bigger' than the other two (I had to dial down the volume a little) and I wonder if the illustrations on the radio compressed the sound. Whatever, it's marvellous and vivid - and I have to say the orchestral playing does put the Swedes and the Mancunians in the shade. And the interpretation held my attention and made me hear the music anew in a way the other two didn't. I'd have to agree now with RM that the Oramo appears to lack personality.

I think the Barenboim / Berlin performance sounds on this test to be a worthy winner.

indeed an excellent run through and convincing case for the Berlin version

Forumites might be interested to know that Barenboim and the Berlin Staatskapelle are performing the Elgar 2 in the Royal Festival Hall on April 21. I've had my ticket since December 2013!

The BAL reviewer didn't like the Barbican acoustics for the Colin Davis / LSO recording. What a pity Sir Colin's 2008 Bavarian Radio Symphony broadcast hasn't been issued on CD (or has it?) as the acoustics, even as heard in the You Tube upload, sound first-rate, as does the performance ...

Still 5 seats available! (Alas I shall be sitting in my car on a train heading south underneath the English Channel at the time the concert starts!)
