Looking through the list of BAL recommendations, it appears there have never been comparisions of any Rossini recordings. This seems extraordinary.

      It does indeed seem extraordinary.

Eine Alpen: - many thanks for your listing above. I have the Muti on an EMI twofer coupled with the Cleobury Petite Messe - but what I wd really like to find now for a Stabat Mater is a recentish HIPP version. No sign of any so far??

I will go for Fricsay (if not overall certainly historical) or Giulini (Philharmonia).

Not that I'm aware of. I've looked through the Presto and Amazon lists.

But there is/was the following HIPP version:

Stoyanova, Lang, Fowler, Borowski, Academy for Ancient Music, Berlin, Rias Chamber Choir, Marcus Creed

Surely the really notable thing is the return of Richard Osborne to the programme -perhaps they do read us at BBC Radio3 after all !

A proper reviewer conducting a proper review .

Yes, and it has since been re-released on Harmonia Mundi's budget price Musique d'Abord label - I have the original release and like it very much.

                    Another vote for Fricsay here.

Ah, I just found that I have this recording in that marbelous anniversary set that HM issued(Sacred Music). Very good recording.

                        Ah, the bliss of it!

A wonderfully done BAL. A sense of the details and of the whole. Wit and seriousness.

                        Encore!!!

Indeed! This is what it should be like.

                            Minority Report Alert!!

It was indeed good to hear Richard Osborne again but I fear that for me he has become almost a parody of himself. Oh that schoolmasterly learning, worn like chain mail and delivered with a clunking fist. "As the King says in Hamlet ...'' If we trimmed out the excess fat I doubt there was more than a 30 minute programme there.

His treatment of the HIPP-informed version was nothing short of scandalous, similarly the Naxos version - let us make up our own minds, with your guidance, dear Richard, rather than having to take your word for it.

                            Rant over!

I agree - a rather dreary old school review. A very safe choice, too, but I suppose that's what's expected in BaL.
