...course the beauty of the FoR3 forum in depth pre-match BaL kickabout is that Micky and others can snaffle all those amazon bargains before the general R3 great unwashed join the online rush, and prices rocket.

( Incidentally, I can no longer use the word rocket without thinking off FF's " Pub Rents Rocket" headline.)

Wow, the Maazel is now at a terrific price...now to be had for just over £5 on Amazon. I remember paying full whack for the original Erato box.

        I still don't want it!

        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This was the soundtrack to a film as i recall in which JMJ shocked some by rolling a cigarette on her inner thigh !

Still prefer Abbado as I did then .

Yes - but it's a studio recording of the Opera that was then used as the soundtrack of the film (the performers miming) rather than a soundtrack that was then issued as a recording, so no reservations about sound quality.

It is far too early on a Saturday morning to be reminded of this ...

I really like the Fruhbeck de Burgos, which I have as a vinyl box set; Grace Bumbry's voice is fabulous; perfectly suited to the character, dark and seductive, with a hint of - almost - 'sleaze' about it.

There's actually no such thing as a toreador.

it was as noted an excellent BAL; thoughtful , considered with quite a rapier at her disposal [will the orchestra ever use a triangle again?] ..... myself i would have the Kaufman, his excerpt provided me with the most unexpected musical moment of the year so far ...

this was the version in the family radiogram and for me it remains unsurpassed
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I had thought that a toreador was a horse-mounted fighter????? but I'm no expert!

...this is indeed so - wiki credits Bizet with the word :

"In English, the torero is sometimes called the toreador. The term does not exist in Spanish; it was invented by Georges Bizet for his opera Carmen. He needed the syllables of the word to match the timing of the song."

The guy with a lance on a horse whose job it is to weaken the bull's neck muscles is a picador....and then there's the rejoneador, who takes part in rejoneo which is a different form of mounted bullfighting.....

I went to a bullfight once, in Granada in 1972, during my Hemingway phase. As it was a novillada, there were no picadores.

She was totally dismissive of Callas, whom I thought was absolutely riveting. What do I know?

It doesn't seem to exist outside this opera, though there is a torero (a matador?)

                                wiki again :

"The main performer, who is the leader of an entourage and the one who kills the bull, is addressed as maestro (master), and his formal title is matador de toros (killer of bulls). The term torero encompasses all who fight the bull in the ring (picadores and rejoneadores). The other bullfighters in the entourage are called subalternos and their suits are embroidered in silver as opposed to the matador's more-theatrical gold."
