    At once, Sir.

Cook was wondering what the peculiar smell was.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Sorry Cali, your otherwise erudite post was so filled with wisdom and insight that bbm and i must have passed over the reportage contained within...you have nothing to blame but your own eloquence

There are a couple of copies of what I take to be the AAM/ Preston version available for 1p plus p&p at http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000004CXH

Yes, that's the version, MLF. I had a listen to it over the weekend and must admit that the natural trumpets sound a bit shaky by today's standards, but it is still well worth having for the boys' voices. You also get that classic recording of the Vivaldi Gloria. Alternatively, there is the AAM's later version with KKC and Cleobury.

You're going to find it easier once we have the highlighted winner/s in the post #1 listings.

EA - I would be very happy to take on joint highlighting duties! The only trouble is I often give these threads a wide berth till Sunday as I often don't get around to listening to BaL until then.

If I totter by on a Sunday evening and there is no highlighting yet, are you happy for me to invade your OP and do the necessary?
I;m a bit like that too, Cali. Sunday or Monday morning, as only a short day for me workwise.

It certainly would make life a lot eaiser for highlighting the ones that won the accolade.

Even although it's Zoverstocks (with whom I've had a long-running dispute over them claiming not to have received a returned box of the wrong CDs), irresistible at the price - and they deliver to France. Thank you, MLF!

Very kind of you, but I'll be OK and they won't be in blue.

What do they say about the colour blue?

One of these discs popped onto my doormat this morning, ( the AAM/Preston, not HD's missing box), and, though not perfect, it is really very good, and an amazing bargain at £1.27.

I'm not one to knock JEG usually, but it knocks spots off his.

Here's a BaL recommendation available for next to nothing, used. ( Schubert Octet)
Schubert: Octets. Decca: 4487152. Buy Presto CD or download online. Wiener Oktett, Wiener Bläsersolisten

I agree - my copy arrived today too. No emotional sterility here (although after Music in the Castle of Heaven I am not sure that is a fair attack on JEG). Preston gets its. (I love the Richter version but find the brass a little OTT.)

The backlog is about 60% completed now. Recommendations highlighted in bold on the "lists".
