I thought at one point that the vintage Christ Church/AAM version might be heading to the top of the pile, but after high praise, it suddenly vanished.

Was that the Simon Preston-led one? Yes - a couple of highly-praised illustrations and then forgotten. (I wasn't as enthusiastic about it as was SH - his later choices I found much more engaging.)

I have the E Flat in the AAM Preston and have never felt the need to buy another .

Me too....and it is coupled with an equally impressive performance of the Vivaldi Gloria.

Also missing from the list is the other, more recent version with the AAM under Stephen Cleobury - a very attractive all-Bach programme on 2 CDs for EMI.

I set them out in detail, not least with you in mind Bbm, in #37 above!!!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Would it be possible to bold the recommended recording on the original list, at some point following the result?

When one looks back over old Bals, it's very difficult to find out what the recommendation was, which is a shame for such an excellent thread.

Caliban, can you please wait and allow me to diplomatically apply the thin end of the wedge first?
