One of many Simon Preston CCCC LP gems that often make their way to my turntable.

Another version (this time in D major) with thrilling boys' voices from the early days of not-very-HIP was Tölzer Knabenchor / Collegium Aureum on DHM.
The Preston version of the E flat Magnifcat is not only available as a download, but also as a CD: it's disc 47 in the big Oiseau-Lyre "Baroque" box that came out last year.

... and for those who have the teldec Bach 2000 edition, the Preston in Eb is in box 6, "sacred vocal works", coupled with the version in D (Harnoncourt).

Which is all good news, even though it isn't my favourite Magnificat (but is certainly one of the good ones). I'm not sure that I have an absolute favourite - and I look forward very much to hearing SH on the subject next week. Among those I have that I play regularly, Pierlot is probably the one I find most enjoyable –but I find plenty to like in performances as varied as Klemperer in Budapest (1949), Couraud/Stuttgart on Eloquence and Fasolis. The ones I can't get on with include Barenboim and Karajan, and while I always enjoy watching Bernstein's English Bach Festival performance, the speeds are rather stately. Harnoncourt I find a bit dogged in this work. But that's just me - and I'm greatly looking forward to this BAL.

I discover that I've only two ancient LPs - one conducted by Gonnenwein, the other by Prohaska. The former I've always loved, especially the soprano Helen Donath. Both nla.

            Time for something newish.

            Great work!

You now have to form a 70s throwback glam rock band, to use that brilliant name, Bbm!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh, yes - I had that LP (what was the label? I know it was a budget priced release, and got very good notices in one of the Penguin Guides from the '70s) I think it was the first to include the Christmas interpolations. It must be getting on for forty years since I bought it - and over thirty since I last heard it.

Wouldn't "JaPan's People" be the dance troupe?

I knew there was something familiar about the name of the modern label that recorded Belohlavek's Martinu cycle!
