Reminds me of that scene from 'A Little Fry & Laurie'

"My dear boy! Come in, come in, come in, come in! Come through to my oubliette, my dear, and faites comme chez vous."
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I do rather like the way James Levine conducts this piece. I have only heard snippets as you do, but not a bad performance and have read the reviews as well! :)

Many years on I have picked up a charity shop copy of the Munch what a marvellous performance no wonder it is such a classic.

The Paray/Detroit recording has been in my lp or CD collection for ages and that's it for me.

I have heard it in Concert twice in the last 5 years, which is enough to last me for a while.
In Joe and Joanna Public's mind it's now permanently associated with a piglet rounding up sheep.

As for other pieces - willowy young women ( Elvira Madigan) and Hovis .

... not forgetting The Onedin Line (much loved my Mme v's ma... )

And a pungent aftershave given as a Christmas present to teenage boys in the 1960s by aunts who didn't really understand such things.

And a cheap cigarillo which at least benefited from a good advertising account...

We don't even descend to mentioning an airline company.

Does that pungent after shave still exist ! old Spice was nearly as horrible as the music promoting it .

I feel sick just looking at it. You eat stuff like that?
