As always it is a very well written and argued review but it is a subjective response with which my ears profoundly disagree !

I felt this too. Made me want to go out and buy it and have a listen.

The odd thing is, I had it once and couldn't stand it, and gave it to Oxfam!

One of the big labels should be snapping up Jayne's services!

I hear it differently too, but a cracking read!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I doubt it as well - but it is a great recording nevertheless

Those not allergic to downloads and who are interested in getting the Erich Kleiber/VPO recording might like to look at the Qobuz site. Both the Concertgebouw and the VPO versions were included in the Decca box "Erich Kleiber: Decca Recordings 1949-1955". The box is no longer available but can be downloaded from Qobuz, in part (£11 for the VPO Eroica on Cd 3) or in total (£30).

Was Jansons' muscular live Bav RSO version mentioned? From his cycle. I was impressed by that one, of recent recordings.

                    That's unlikely to happen.

Unless he's recorded it more than once, yes it was - and very favourably, IIRC.

Indeed , a splendid box and available from Decca directly as a download as well as other suppliers. Decca's decision to delete the CD versions of all those Original Masters boxes was baffling as the very high prices they command on Amazon for second hand copies shows there was still demand . The Monteux box also bit the dust not long after release .

Unfortunately the "Download" button on the Decca website merely directs you to iTunes or Amazon.

It is a great pity that the Monteux box is no longer available. He was such a unique conductor and the box contains many treasured delights. also the sound was remarkably good. (The Monteux Decca/Philips box does not seem to be available on the Qobuz website.)

Eloquence announced that Monteux's Beethoven symphonies would be reissued in 2014 and Rob Cowan said the same in Gramophone last month - no sign as yet .

NK did give a positive thumbs up to his Eroica .
