In terms of speeds (at least) I'd certainly agree with that. The whole performance is thrilling.

Not really. When you say something like a "proper" version, I'm afraid you're using dead matches.

Was just a silly throwaway line, that's all - not a 'proper' point for further discussion

I have very few recordings, mostly older ones: Kleiber/Concertgebouw, Furtwängler/VPO, Schmidt-Isserstedt/VPO and (more recently) Mackerras/RLPO*. I rarely play any of them, preferring to listen occasionally to live broadcasts or concert performances. I enjoyed Rattle's CBSO performance which was broadcast this week (much better than his recorded version with the VPO IIRC). I hope NK will do the job properly and listen to the recordings on his short(er) list "blind" so that he is not predisposed to any version by conductor/orchestra reputation.

Incidentally I hope we hear an extract from the royal recording, King Frederik IX conducting the Danish NRSO (the only occasion in history in which a monarch has recorded a Beethoven symphony?)

            * and downloaded recording of Cluytens/BPO - very good

A wonderful curio! For anyone as intrigued by this as I was, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA2mv1wbJEo

Yes, I was listening to some of it earlier. I like the second comment below the clip: "I like the stately tempo...Some conductors race through this piece and it loses its majesty!"

All nine symphonies are available as a CD quality flac download from Qobuz, for just £11.56, or individually as preferred.

Listen to Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt in unlimited on Qobuz and buy the albums in Hi-Res 24-Bit for an unequalled sound quality. Subscription from £10.83/month

They are great, but given the mammoth range of orchestral versions I can't imagine there will be much time to consider piano transcriptions.

EA - are you sure that there are two Barbirolli /BBCSO versions ? I thought that there was only one recorded by EMI but it has been reissued by different labels . Michael Kennedy's note for the Barb Soc issue mentions an apparently incandescent live account which led to the proposal to go into the studio but the sparks did not quite fly .

It is quite gruff and dogged and has some good things in it but not one of Sir John's best records . If that live account has been discovered and released however I should like to hear it .

Aside from the other half dozen or so recordings that I own, all on Alpies fine list, I also have Karajan with the Staatskapelle Berlin from 1944. A superbargain on

I'll be listening to that again, and to Fried from 1924, and to...

These are the ones which I assume to be different.

Cheers so it seems - odd that MK did not mention in it in his sleeve note for the Barb Soc recording but that may have predated this . It does not appear to be the earlier performance but a later one . Did you ever hear him conduct it in Manchester ?
