What a minefield!! I just wonder what critics do in a situation like this!! I have Abbado's re-mastered account set with the BPO, and I didn't know he recorded this with the Lucerne lot! Albeit on DVD. Should be interesting. also Karajan's 1962 cycle and Harnoncourt's as well.

There was a fine ASMF/Marriner version available, but it seems to be off the map at present.

The Abbado DVD is from one of his last concerts, BBM. I haven't got it (on the Wish List) but his BPO recording is a masterly performance and it wouldn't come as much of a surprise if yet another Abbado recording takes the palm.

It's with some trepidation that I embarked on scanning my shelves to see how many Eroica's I have but unless I've missed the odd one hidden in a boxed set it would appear to be 34. Needless to say, I'm not exactly in the market for another one but I wouldn't mind betting that the 'winner' will be one I haven't got!

With all these additions, the latest count of available orchestral versions is 195. (205 if you count the arrangements)

What are the odds on Abbado?

Which one? The BPO recording (is that the same one that appeared on DVD with the Ninth?) is my favourite of the "modern big band with HIPP influence" recordings. (I didn't like his earlier VPO recording, and I don't know the Lucerne).

Working on the "Pet's Law" principle, it'll probably be the Lucerne that's chosen!

Surely we can get to 200? Does CBSO/Weller count?

...and how about the RLPO/Mackerras, from a set that has retained its place near the top of my favourites for many years?

I count 13 versions of the Eroica on my shelves (paltry by comparison with some here!), of which my favourite is probably BPO/Abbado, followed closely by the 1962 BPO/Karajan and the BPO/Cluytens - not sure what it is about the Berliners....

Looks like the Katsaris set of Liszt's piano transcriptions is also still available: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Ar...hoven+katsaris

Edit: Should also add my thanks to EA for the heroic effort in post #1 - if only R3 were as diligent in compiling and publishing their playlists...

It is a true monstrosity, but in the spirit of getting to 200/210:

EDIT: it is a fake, isn't it? That isn't a real orchestra, but a sub-SIBELIUS "sampled" confection ... surely???!!!

I think that one has to be listed with the arrangements. As you say, it uses sampled sounds. I once did a film orchestration and was gutted when they had used sampled sounds.

I've been having a look round for the Erich Kleiber/VPO recording but the only way I can see to get it is via the recent VPO box. Does anyone know any other source?

This recording was my introduction to the Eroica (I bought the LP from a second hand record shop when I was a teenager).

Oh dear! My introduction was Erich Kleiber with the Concertgebouw, bought new as a teenager.

It was the first issue, with a break in the slow movement, which wasn't ideal. A great performance though.
