BaL 6.12.14 - Bach: 4 Orchestral Suites (BWV 1066-69)
i find that Bach's major pieces are never definitively nailed, even in a library sense; one always wants to hear another version .... new recordings offering revelations and old favourites tugging heart strings etc ... lovely BAL ... i want them all!
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.
I do wish that ML had played some more of the Boston/ Parrott version; the short extract that we heard sounded really wonderful.
Also, I think it's a great pity that the AAM and Egarr always play Bach ( and others - Handel maybe?) at that silly pitch a WHOLE TONE lower than A 440.
'Authentic' it may be, but when compared to the other 2 versions in ML's short-list, the AAM sounded quite drab and grey.

... along with the Cafe Zimmerman (enthusiastically mentioned on this Thread, but mentioned only in passing by ML) the versions I'm most interested in buying.

Thanks Alison. Was any reference made to the slight clicking noise which is reported in one customer review as amazon.co.uk? All 11 people rating that review found it helpful, so I guess it might well be there.
I've just read that review about the clicking noise, Bryn...I had a listen to it and it sounds to me like the noise coming from the keys/mouthpiece of the bassoon when it has an important part to play. Maybe the microphone was too close, and I have to say that it would irritate me on repeated listenings and dissuade me from this set. (You can hear it on track 2 of the samples on Amazon).

Yes, I had a listen via Qobuz and came to a similar conclusion. By the way, contrary to the impression given in the BaL survey, the Petite Band set from the early '80s is very much available, and very cheaply as part of a boxed set (£6.53 including p&p) via the amazon.co.uk marketplace:

Yes, I got this just a few months ago, and it is a very nice set indeed.

It was odd to mention Cafe Zimmermann without comment (at least none that I heard). I would have been genuinely interested in his opinion. It possibly counted against them that the Suites are spread over different CDs, (as indeed are the Brandenburgs).
