I do like to have all the scene connecting drum-rolls intact but it's surprising what wide variation there is in this as well. Once you start comparing recordings you can see just how much of a mess it all is.

A similar effect occurs when you start compiling a list of the damn things!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

... my simple solution is not to have any copies at all.

Martin Cotton compares recordings of Stravinsky’s masterpiece for the Ballets Russes.

..... Presumably Martin Cotton will attempt to tackle all three - or maybe just the two 'complete' versions. (One assumes the piano four-hands, and 'three movements for piano solo' versions will be excluded, from the programme description).

              ...

              1911 Version

              ...

              1947 Version

              ...

              Unspecified

              ...

              Suite

Taking a look in the Radio Times, I see the listing suggests that the survey will limit itself to the 1911 version....

Still, this will serve as a bump for this thread, in advance of Saturday's programme.

This Radio Times online listing makes no mention of restriction of the 1911 version.

I wonder if this the case or whether the Radio Times is merely stating the year of composition?

I'm looking forward to this Bal.

Currently on a CD buying-holiday, but even if I wasn't I'm content with the recordings on my Sony composer conducting box set* for most things Stravinsky. I do Like Karajan's later DG performance of Rite.

                    *contains 1911, 1947 & suite.

Hmmm.... don't think I recall the RT listing e.g. "R Strauss Oboe Concerto (1945)" ... But I may be wrong.

Aside from the discussion around the question of differing versions/scores, the recent Our Summer BAL on Petrushka concluded that the recommended version was... er...

Abbado? Rattle? Dorati? Bernstein? Boulez? Dutoit? Roth?

"Concluded"??? I think you might be mistaking us for another Forum, veriss - we don't do "conclusions" here; just a sort of fed-up fading out! And long may it so continue: with works of this standard, there is no single "recommended version"; just people passing on their own responses to share them with everyone else.

I can't quite believe the mind-bending intonation displayed by some of the trumpeters and bassoonists...

                                And not just in Stravinsky...
