Yes - I was very impressed, too. More "urgent" than "terrifying" in the manners of Karajan or Mravinsky - and I felt the tempoereature dropped for the Third Movement - but completely convincing in its own terms, and an excellent finale, too.

(BtW: Was it my radio, or was there some CD "sticking" at one point, too? And do the movements all segue so abruptly into each other on the disc, or was this the Beeb in a hurry?)

Cheers Stan! I've got a couple of Petrenko's and was sort of looking out for a complete set of Shostas without breaking the bank.

In that case I think the Barshai set fits the bill. Not quite the super bargain it was when Superdrug was selling it for a fiver (or even less) but still well worth the current asking price.

          This the one?

Downloaders can get the set for £7.99 in very good sounding MP3s from the fluvials:

(£7.99 today = "cheaper" than a fiver in the '90s? No notes or packaging - or actual disc! - but still an unbelievably cheap way of purchasing this excellent cycle for those who stare penury in the eye.)

It was £2.50 on the Strand, mate (as I've annoyed folk by crowing before! )

At the weekend I got the No 10 disc out of the box - cost me a princely £2.50, did I mention that? - and was impressed all over again by the performance. I'm glad it received honourable mentions on Saturday. Having also heard the Jarvi on Monday morning on R3, I don't think I shall be adding it to the collection - the Barshai (with the added sense of 'connection' to DSCH via the conductor) plus my various Soviet versions will do me just fine.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

No - if I see it in a charity shop (for, say £2.50 ) I'll snap it up. But, if I do get another Shosty#10, it'll be the Live Mravinsky.

I got it (Jarvi) for £3.00 inc p&p. If I get any more Shosty, it'll be the Jansons 4 - moving on to my fave DSCH symphony.

I think the 4th is my "fave", too - if not, then definitely the 15th. The version I'm saving my pennies for is this:

... the older DECCA recording was my introduction to the work and is still a fantastic performance (as are Kondrashin, Barshai and Rattle) - but a Live Haitink with the CSO and a documentary from Gerard McBurney.

PM me your address and Santa might just oblige. My copy is gathering dust in the charity shop pile and you, rather than Oxfam or CRUK, would be most welcome to it.

Go for it, Bbm: Just think of how all those wind/military band snare drummers will forever hold you in their debt! (Three of 'em in unison, I reckon!)
