Personally, I'd wonder why he had neither of the Haitinks.

Thanks all, just the answers I need with both the insight and humour I'd hoped for.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I believe that the better known image in black and white is the Leningrad Philharmonic Hall while the one in colour I think is in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

Unfortunately, further photographic research seems to indicate that both organs have been refurbished since 1969.
Don't want to labour this question too much, but I was going by the sleeve note to the Melodiya release of the Moscow performance, which says '...the composer himself, who at that time was in Leningrad and was able to hear this program in the Large Hall of the Philharmonic Society: for a long time he sat silent...etc.' Signed 'F. Sofronov'.

That's offensive. if you're not interested in the question, you don't have to reply.

                            Quite cheapo!

Having heard the Jarvi/RSNO complete performance earlier today I now fully understand why Stephen Johnson chose it, the orchestra is sensational. Sounds an excellent recording too (listened in the car).

Hiya Radio64, Janson's and his Bavarian players on EMI/Warner are excellent guides as is Petrenko with the RLPO on Naxos. Also Rudolf Barshai and the WDR SO on Brilliant Classics are excellent too.
