This (shost 10) was done a few years ago with Ed Seckerson chooosing Jaarvi /SNO , which I agree is the best. So why again? I wish they do the 8th, hasn't been looked at for "yonks"

Well, obviously because they realise they made a terrible mistake last time and wish to correct it.

My memory is of Peter Quantrill? Because he played an extract from his old Melodiya LP of the live Karajan...well before it became available on CD.

I still don't see why it's come round so soon. Could reel off my usual list of major repertoire that's not been covered for yonks (or not at all, e.g. Beethoven Sym 4).

Was definitely Ed Seckerson. I used to enjoy his reviews, even if I didn't always agree with his 'winners!'

Is he still around? Haven't him or of him, on the radio for years?

It was 14 years ago. I was a young man then.

He did a BaL not so long ago - West Side Story - and was on the last Radio 2 Arts Show http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04hcmtp

I find I have this or something similar on the shelf: SNO/ Jarvi c/w Ballet Suite No 4.

Back in days of (even greater?) poverty I seem to have bought it on the Boots cheapo CD label, perhaps in the knowledge or hope that it was the BaL winner. (Remember the days when Boots found it worthwhile to do their own CDs??). There is a mention of Conifer on the disc - is this the same one that ES picked?

EDIT On reflection, probably not from Boots. It has the number CLASS 7006, "Exclusively sold and distributed by Entertainment UK Ltd...". It was definitely cheap: can anyone remind me who sold them?

EDIT 2 Google suggests it was a Woolies-exclusive label, and it does seem to be the same 1988 Chandos issue favoured by ES. Heaven knows how Conifer sneaked in...

Ed was on Cd review two weeks ago discussing new orchestral releases.

Boots did do their own super-bargain CDs called "Classical Collection": black & white borders on the cover, the Boots logo, and licensed from various other labels (I have the Drottingholm Baroque Ensemble's rather splendid Vivaldi Four Seasons originally on BIS, bought in 1996 for £3.99).

Woolworth's had its own bargain CD label which used Conifer Classics catalogue - some of the Walter Weller Beethoven cycle appeared there. Lurid coloured covers --- aha! Like this one!

Well, I am certainly happy that he is clearly alive and kicking. Don't know how I missed his recent broadcasts, but I am not glued to Radio 3 24/7!

                          Now - there's an idea!

fhg: yes, I suddenly remembered what the Boots range looked like - from it I have a decent Grieg concerto/ solo piano anthology from Eva Knardahl, and rather a good piano rag collection at least.

When you say that Woolie's used the Conifer Classics catalogue, I think that needs expansion because the Shoster 10 is a Chandos disc and the other one I can put my mitts on, a Butterworth/ Parry/ Bridge anthology cond. William Boughton, must be Nimbus. So presumably Conifer arranged licensing deals for repertoire they couldn't provide from their own catalogue?

Yes - to be more accurate, I should have written "which used recordings from the Conifer Classics catalogue amongst others": the Weller Beethoven was Chandos, too, IIRC?

Ancerl/ Czech PO is the one I 'grew up with' and for me remains the 'benchmark'.
