What a great work this is. Brahms at his finest! And so many outstanding musicians have recorded it.

I'm going to hear it in a couple of hours time in the parish church at Deddington, Oxfordshire, played by:

Lucy Gould, Sophie Renshaw, Kate Gould and Viv McLean

      Deep joy.

Is this the one that Schoenberg orchestrated?

I've been meaning to get that version for about the last 40 years but never got around to it. You might just have nudged me.

I've owned the LP box (3 Brahms quartets plus the Schumann quintet) for some 40 years but have always found it absolutely infuriating with its splitting of works across discs, the 2nd quartet across 3 sides

Just checked the riverpeople for a better-arranged CD reissue. No joy - there's quartets 1 and 3 on one disc, and the Schumann and Brahms quintets on another, but no sign of the 2nd quartet anywhere

EDIT Ah, the 2nd quartet lurks here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rubinstein-C...stein+guarneri but the 1/3 coupling appears to be only available secondhand. So will it figure on the programme?

A box of all the quartets plus the quintet would surely be a winner, with or without the Schumann.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Thanks fhg: I'd made the mistake of searching for Brahms+Rubinstein+Guarneri.

Duly ordered from Marketplace - thanks for the steer.

My only recording is a complete set with Beaux Arts Trio and Trampler. I haven't played it for a bit. I heard MTT conduct the Schoenberg Orchestration a few years back and I've listened to that several times on Spotify.

Strange as it seems, I have Rattle's Berlin account of the Schoenberg transcription of the score! :)

By coincidence, I have just been listening to the Demus/Barylli recording, which was in the Korean Westminster Chamber Music box. I think the box is now nla, and the quartets are not in the later DG Westminster box.

Like meeting an old friend, and a beautifully musical performance. I rate Demus highly as a chamber music player and accompanist.
