Anyone know if the Bournemouth SO, version conducted by George Hurst, produced by Brian Culverhouse on the Contour label is available?
Only used on LP. I don't think it ever had a CD release. Perhaps Heritage, who reissued the Unicorn Delius collection, and more recently some Brian and Foulds would consider reinstating this to the catalogue.
Try Boult's 1973 Prom performance on a BBC MM CD to hear the RAH organ, particularly thunderous in that notorious glissando in Uranus.
I do actually have this CD - must give it another whirl - now, in fact! Yes - now I'm thinking about it - it does indeed, have that awe-inspiring glissando.

Someone (can't remember who sorry) on another thread recently said how specific Boult was in getting exactly what he wanted at this point. Apparently, he used to demonstrate it by bringing both forearms down across the entire keyboard.

I think I'm right in saying that the Maazel / French National Orchestra version doesn't specify the name of the chorus in "Neptune" and if memory serves the 'Gramophone' review revealed it to be an anonymous boys' choir, probably from some local church.

How do you rate Maazel's 'Planets'? I've read mixed comments on it, generally...
Wasn't the Halle/Loughran recording highly regarded at one time, I can remember hearing the LP in the late 70's.
I'm sure it must have been a good seller on vinyl at the time. I can certainly remember the cover but not whether I actually bought it or not. I can, however, definitely remember seeing Loughran conduct it at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig early seventies (with Britten Young Person's). Doubtless, many orchestra members were playing it for the first time and many audience members will not have heard it before.
Rob Cowan played excerpts from the Steinberg in the last year or two but for me no one comes close to Sargent and the BBCSO. It was my first love and I remain captivated it especially the wonderful playing in the last bars of Jupiter - a proper final chord!
Fascinating BAL this one - whatever the outcome - which is just about to be revealed. The notion that you might not even be able to tell what key the work ends in depending perhaps on a door opener/closer or the limits of one's hearing is very odd - though why any piece "has" to conform to any pre-defined key structure is also odd.
Worth recording this one to listen to again and again.
