BaL 14.06.14 - Rameau: Pièces de Clavecin

The excerpts played on Essential Classics this morning made me turn to the extracts from Pieces de clavecin en concerts on Disc 1 of the harmonia mundi boxed set "Music of the Enlightenment" which, as noted elsewhere, is ridiculously cheap on Amazon Marketplace: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

I think I prefer these to Rameau's earlier "Pieces de clavecin". What I love about these is that the Rousset's harpsichord plays with violin and viola de gamba as more than mere accompaniment, in perfect balance.

(Rousset also plays the Couperin pieces on the same disc).

I'm sure that Rousset's version of the Pièces de claveçin en concert" is excellent - however, I was swayed towards the Kuijkens on Accent because they also employ a flute, and that brings even more charm to these pieces. But it must also be said that I would buy pretty much anything where the Kuijkens are involved!

I've just ordered a used copy of the 2CD set from a marketplace seller on amazon.com.

Now safely arrived. What wonderful playing of such imaginative music. Perhaps Presto's new series of reissues might expand to include this set.

Tantalisingly, a "taster" from that set is included on the first CD of the big HM "Lumieres" box. I have listened to a few of the discs, but not that one yet - must do so before the BAL.

And what a bargain that collection is: 30CDs for around £16. Just purchased and only sampled Rousset's Couperin so far but sounds promising.
