Kreisleriana is something that I associate with humiliation. when I was in my last year at school, I learnt one of the movements, and felt confident I was the best pianist in the school, being the only one to have passed Grade 8 a t the time. A lad who was two years younger heard me play it and promptly learnt it himself within a couple of weeks. I was mortified, but worse was to follow. Within the next few months, he had learnt the complete work.

Yup that's my kind of BAL!

Cracking list, Alpie!! Thanks, as ever!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Lists of pianists are easy. It's concerto recordings that are a nightmare, with soloist, orchestra and conductor to sort out.

            Yep!

I have three versions, all on LP, none making it to Alpie's fine list. Clara Schumann's pupil Adelina de Lara, Artur Rubinstein and Karl Engel.

I have a soft spot for the LP from which I learned the work, an HMV Melodiya by Victoria Postnikova. Its coupling was a very educative selection of studies, one each by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Rachmaninov. It's well overdue for a re-spin - anyone else recall it?

Of my six other recordings all but one are in EA's list, the exception being Fou Ts'ong on a Carlton twofer..
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

                  Heroic list, Alpie.
I learned this from a Peter Frankl recording on Vox, not on the list. I don't remember when I last heard that. I think that I also have Rubinstein which has been mentioned but also didn't make the cut. When I want to listen to the piece I turn to Kempff, and occasionally to Argerich

Great can't wait for this! There have been a number of good BaL's lately! Is there an unde4rcover boarder member on these hereabouts? :)

Canadian Brass have recorded this too!

Well, probably me too, but we mustn't be selfish, there is a wide spectrum of musical taste.

In any case, small crumbs of interest for the individual from the present regime must be gathered in upturned lips and fully savoured.

The Tchaik Piano Concerto one was Quite Interesting... ....(Precisely one week from this moment, I shall be sitting listening to it live!)

I always try to listen live, but sometimes I have been known to fall asleep.
