I've been half-heartedly attempting to learn this piece for the last few weeks, after realising that it's actually one of Schumann's easier (technically, anyway) piano works. Not sure I have a favourite version. Perahia maybe.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

You've inspired me to give it another. I haven't played it since 1969, but it's all coming back (i.e. the opening movement).

I've always thought that Rubinstein is Quentin Crisp's twin brother.

"And so he was called Artur, although in English-speaking countries, he preferred to be known as Arthur Rubinstein," according to Wikipedia.

I have the impression the sense of humour these boards once carried, is draining away. I might throw in the towel sometime soon. There seems to be an 'elitist' theme of those who are 'in' all having very in-house back-slapping, and so on, and people like me who merely want to engage in general music chit-chat.
The element of 'who can come across as the most "in" seems to dominate quite often.

visualnickmos, please dont throw in the towel. For a start, you need a towel to dry yourself and a wet one is no use. To continue, my humour drain is blocked, so nothing is draining away, and indeed, there is humorous effluent running all over the joint, I might have to call Dynorod to come and save me from drowning in my own jollity.

I am not one of the musical elite, but unlike you, I dont worry about them. They exist, they have a lot of special stuff to tell us. We all have some specialism to offer, its just that this is a predominately musically themed site and those who know about music tend to predominate. But when there is an opportunity to speak about plant disease, I will certainly not be silent.

Agreed. I'd be very disappointed if you threw in the towel, visualnickmos. Your posts are invariably worthwhile and add considerably to this forum.

Well guys; I am actually very touched by your responses.

Alpie - I always admire your lists, your knowledge and guidance when I (often) ask for expertise and qualified advice about recordings.

And umslopogaas - you make me laugh with your - dare I say it - and I mean it in the 'best possible taste' almost mad-cap, BUT always informed take on many themes discussed in these threads, posts, etc.

With such genuine, funny, clever and nice people on here, I am gonna stay! Be nuts not to.
                              Thank you.

PS I've gone and ordered (Amz France - cheap as chips) Bernstein's LvB sym set (Sony) NYPO. As the reviewer mentioned on Saturday regarding Beethoven; 'there is something special about the 'old school' approach, compared to modern versions, which although excellent in many ways, are just a bit too exact' I paraphrase, but you'll know what I'm saying...
