I keep hearing references to Ashkenazy/ Segal but surely it should be Maazel? Unless it's a late remake I can't trace it anywhere in Penguin and EMG guides. Surely they didn't get the original labelling wrong?

EDIT Ah, corrected at end of prog!!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

The winning Argerich was quite amazing on the final excerpt! But not enough so to make me add it to my current 7. Guess I just don't need the absolutely best(?) version of this particular work

EDIT 10.25: a long silence here at the end of the programme. Is this stark amazement at Argerich and a rush to the Riverpeople, or general apathy akin to mine?

Good observation I very much enjoyed this Bal - excellent, in fact, in what surely must be one of the most potentially problem-laden BaLs a reviewer could be requested to do. I enjoyed Argerich (well, the extracts played) but I feel I have enough Tchaik 1s to last a lifetime! One I really enjoy for its fire and light, is Emil Gilels and Ormandy. Love it.

Ah, no doubt the root of the confusion!

EDIT As far as I can see the Ashkenazy/ Segal came out on Decca SXL6861 c1979, coupled with the Introduction and Allegro appassionato op92 and the Intro and Concert Allegro op134. Oddly, EMG credited all the conducting to Segal but Penguin said VA did it in the two concertante works.

Yes, it was excellent, based on a deep knowledge of the music that Tchaikovsky wrote. I felt that I understood the score better at the end of this BaL - that I was in a better position to appreciate the merits of the huge variety of interpretations. Can one ask for more from a reviewer?

There's something rotten in the state of BaL - neither Bbm nor Bill Tong has been along to enquire about who won!?!

Agree - an excellent reviewer. I certainly felt I'd learned something from the review that adds to my understanding and indeed, appreciation of this masterpiece (popular, so it "can't be any good"! )

I too have Argerich with Dutoit her last husband but one, on DG 415 062-2 and that will do very well for me (coupled with a good Prokofiev PC3 with the late Bawdy Claude conducting the Berlin Phil.) But just how many recordings should be forced to sit through to finally come to a decision as the best available? Almost impossible...

Didn't our otherwise excellent reviewer refer to an excerpt from the finale as being by Richter, Karajan and the Vienna [Phil.]? Surely he meant the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
