I bought the Van Cliburn studio version with Kondrashin in 1958 and have never thought that I needed another. Wonder who will be the chosen one as its always seemed fairly bomb-proof on record.

The Ogdon/Monteux/LSO is a live performance iirc coupled with Tchaikovsky symphony no.5 both in stunning performances - not outright winners perhaps but well worth having

... this is - literally - a work I do not know at all. But I find I have the ICON Gilels box on the shelves, which has this ( avec Maazel / New Philharmonia ). Hitherto unplayed; I must give it a whirl to see why so many people like it....

Did Clifford Curzon frequently Mikado-ise his Christian name to Kurifuodo ??

Kyla Greenbaum's old WRC LP is quite good (Sinfonia of London/Richard Austin) - as is Katchen's - LSO/Gamba - on Decca (and CD, presumably...)

Hope my memory is correct pg - with Ogdon/and Monteux and LSO on tour, it seems a no-brainer to me at £2.43

I've just remembered that I recorded both pieces for a friend who was in prison at the time and only had the Karajan Boheme to listen to. He was very pleased to receive them

The first piano concerto was written for Anton Rubinstein and despite the famous scene in Ken Russell's The Music Lovers Tchaikovsky never played it in public.

                    Neither did Rubenstein, did he?

I have very few versions on my shelves:

                        Berman/BPO/Karajan
                        Richter/VSO/Karajan
                        Gilels/Chicago SO/Reiner
                        Argerich/RPO/Dutoit
                        Van Cliburn/RCA SO/Kondrashin

It's a piece I rarely play but any of these will do me.

Slightly horrified at the number of versions on my shelves: thought I had only a couple

                          In rough order of purchase
                          (LP) Ashkenazy/ Maazel
                          (LP) Berman/ Karajan
                          (LP) Donohoe/ Barshai
                          (CD box) Curzon/Szell
                          (CD box) Ogden/ Barbirolli
                          (Charity shop LP) Richter/ Karajan
                          (Charity shop CD) Gilels/ Mehta

Think for sentimental reasons I'd still stick with Ashkenazy out of this lot. The BaL choice will need to be super-sensational to get my wallet up from its weekend snooze
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

If I'm not mistaken, I am sure it was Ashkenazy/Maazel last time they BaLed this? Must have been some years ago.....

Didn't Ashkenazy return to the work not so long ago as conductor? But maybe not for a recording.
