you should be able to do it -I do, here in Germany. I use Google Chrome on a PC(laptop) and go to the BBC web page , choose Radio 3, then click on "listen live". I then get a download action, which confused me, because it was blank. I went into the download file ,with the intention of deleting it, as I thought it was useless, but clicked on it and suddenly my media player Foobar started playing the live transmission. I was listening all morning to the Bal ect.
        try it.

Yes, that's Ok for listening live but not for downlaoding podcasts.

I know there are ways for getting around the 'UK only' issue but I've never looked into it properly.

            BaL Recommendations Revisited

Perhaps one of my favourite corners of For3 are the BaL threads. I'll often download a podcast, such as the one on Bruckner 8, and then re-read the associated thread from start to finish.

When I do so, I'm often minded to ask what those who bought the recommended recording made of it, or any other recordings based on the BaL. Rather than make the BaL threads even longer, I thought a new thread to discuss this would be worth while.

For instance, Bruckner 8: there were those tempted by Boulez/VPO (DG), Gielen (Hanssler), Giulini/BPO (Testament)...did you buy the discs and have they lived up to the enticing snippet you heard on BaL?

Yes, I now go to the Guilini/BPO Bruckner rather than my old favourite, Karajan. Wonderful sweep and depth of sound, but a warmth and humanity in tone and phrasing, too.

The main instance that occurs to me is Leonhardt's Bach B minor Mass which years ago was a runner-up/also-ran but the extracts from which sounded to me ideal and infinitely preferable to the winner (Gardiner, istr) - I bought the Leonhardt and it remains my favourite.

Yes cracking thread Thropps - as, still, a complete novice I find BAL recommendations a great help especially if the medal winners find a degree of support hereabouts. Recent CDs I constantly revisit include Faure Nocturnes, Prokofiev 5/1, Liszt PC 1/2 and Berlioz Nuits d'ete........

I realised on reading this thread that I very seldom buy BAL recommendations - sometimes because I already have them , sometimes because I don't like them or don't care for the work .

The last I did was Berglund's VW 4 and very good it is too .

Really glad you caught up with these - some things are indeed sui generis.

I collected Mozart 41 (Stuttgart RSO/Norrington), Brahms PC1 (Freire/Chailly), Beethoven Sonata 32 (Brautigam), Prokofiev 6 (Gergiev), Dvorak Cello Concerto (Fournier/Szell) and VW 4 (Berglund) in the last couple of years. That I haven't played the Prokofiev much is no reflection on the performance: all the others I have found very satisfying with new slants on familiar pieces.

I'm looking for old BaLs on piano music: Beethoven; Chopin; Debussy; Mozart, etc.

And opera: Wagner, Verdi, Strauss, ...

Anything pre-18 Sep 2010, as that's how far back the official podcasts go: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/bal/all
