BaL Recommendations Revisited
Perhaps one of my favourite corners of For3 are the BaL threads. I'll often download a podcast, such as the one on Bruckner 8, and then re-read the associated thread from start to finish.
When I do so, I'm often minded to ask what those who bought the recommended recording made of it, or any other recordings based on the BaL. Rather than make the BaL threads even longer, I thought a new thread to discuss this would be worth while.
For instance, Bruckner 8: there were those tempted by Boulez/VPO (DG), Gielen (Hanssler), Giulini/BPO (Testament)...did you buy the discs and have they lived up to the enticing snippet you heard on BaL?It loved to happen. -- Marcus Aurelius

The main instance that occurs to me is Leonhardt's Bach B minor Mass which years ago was a runner-up/also-ran but the extracts from which sounded to me ideal and infinitely preferable to the winner (Gardiner, istr) - I bought the Leonhardt and it remains my favourite."...the isle is full of noises,

I collected Mozart 41 (Stuttgart RSO/Norrington), Brahms PC1 (Freire/Chailly), Beethoven Sonata 32 (Brautigam), Prokofiev 6 (Gergiev), Dvorak Cello Concerto (Fournier/Szell) and VW 4 (Berglund) in the last couple of years. That I haven't played the Prokofiev much is no reflection on the performance: all the others I have found very satisfying with new slants on familiar pieces.

I'm looking for old BaLs on piano music: Beethoven; Chopin; Debussy; Mozart, etc.
And opera: Wagner, Verdi, Strauss, ...
Anything pre-18 Sep 2010, as that's how far back the official podcasts go: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/bal/allIt loved to happen. -- Marcus Aurelius
