It's better than nothing but whereas it used to be '... of the year', it's now every second year?
It's always been a bi-annual event (introduced in 1978, but no competitions in 1979, '81, '83 etc etc). Interesting to ponder, too, if this 1970s initiative would ever be considered by the Beeb today? (Except as a "Britain's Got Young Talent"-type TV show, perhaps?)

We've come quite a way from BaL here, haven't we?

Yes - too far, indeed, but that in itself is perhaps an underlying reflection of what many of us feel is the 'state of play' of Bal.

Just to win the 'pedant of the week' award, it’s biennial, not biannual, which would be twice a year.

When did BaL become two handed?

Owing to my ignorance I've only recently made BaL an appointment to listen and actually somewhat enjoy it's two hander style (I had assumed it was always so) I was going back over the podcast archive picking out composers of interest and noticed that these only featured a reviewer. I thought this was odd but the change did not click until I found this forums Facebook page and a debate on the this subject.... I see it is not a universally welcomed development....

                Building a Library playlist

Just enjoying sampling two playlists of previous BaL winners I came across on Spotify. Tons of top recordings going back to 1995-2013. Also 2013 - present. Would keep someone happy during self-isolation with no sport on the telly.

why cant there be new BAL

Surely everything is done via internet and other technology. Whats the difficulty with making new reviews rather than repeating
"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence"

We need to know what the plan is for a return to semi normality with BAL. Perhaps they feel remote technology misses the unique magic of a face to face encounter with the "face of Rec Review" which seems to be the all important factor these days? (I don't have a beef with Andrew McGregor himself - he serves the brief he's given, even if a willing participant - its with the policy of presenter being a most important factor, rather than the authority of the review and reviewer - and quality delivered to the listener.

Roll on AI and simultaneous translation - I assume the French equivalent programme (which I listened to without understanding a word when driving in France last year) remains a serious programme?

....or maybe its a way to make sure that AMcG is still in charge of every damned minute of every damned edition of the programme =- from home.........blimey.
He is the one factor that makes me switch off.

A perfect opportunity to relaunch Discovering Music, properly, unless people like Stephen Johnson are too busy right now.

                                Agreed!
Even if new episodes were impractical right now, Discovering Music repeats would be infinitely better than repeats of recent BaLs.
