Um. what, exactly, is it that you have purchased. There are a few recordings mentioned in this thread.

The Van Swieten Trio on brilliant is also very good.

The Beaux Arts set on philips, recorded in the 1970s, is how I first got to know and fall in love with these marvellous works - to my ears they now sound a little heavy, without the light touch and sparkle that the more Historically-Informed approach of Trio 1790 and the Van Swietens brings.

But they are great works - certainly a "must have"!
        .

I have the Brilliant set, Vinteuil and like it very much. But I still haven't got round to purchasing the other Brilliant must-have you told me about, the complete Baryton Trios. They are still on my list, I promise!

...having reminded myself of that complete set of the Baryton Trios, I have just found the 21 disc set for £18 on Amazon and snapped it up!

              .
Thanks very much for this information. I have ordered 4 CDs of the later trios from JPC at €2.99 each. Two single discs and a double disc. €5.99 P&P total €14.96. I think that's a nice price, but it'll be a false economy because the complete set was only €29.99 plus p&p, and no I doubt I'll want the earlier trios at some stage.

On the other hand, I cannot think of any symphony that is "greater" than Mozart's 40th.

I would say the last four of Mozart go further expressively than any of Haydn's. Haydn's symphones are, OTOH, almost endlessly inventive and a sheer joy. No need to stint ourselves with one or the other.

I have the Colin Davis set but the Abbado looks tempting!
