Peter Katin - illustrated - and highly recommended. Lubimov mentioned but not played.

I am not a fan of 'period' instruments, in this context. But I am glad to say that my Radu Lupu recording is the winner!! (Not the Legends recording, but I suspect it be still top choice?)

Huh?! I thought it was the Legends recording?

He has only made one recording BBM - namely the one now on Decca legends.

You'll probably find that BBM means that he has an earlier issue on Decca of the same recording, but not the later Legends re-release. At least that's what I understood from his post - but only he can say, in the final analysis!

Doesn't that meant they are the same recording, but with different pictures on the front cover?

I would have liked more attention to other recordings, it felt liked a two horse race from the beginning - I was not sure whether he was going to go for RL or MP, and he wrong-footed me, as I suspected MP would get the nod!

I have the Brendel Decca analogue from the 1970s (?) which I feel no need to augment.

I heard it and it was plain it was supposedly meant to be of recents versions - why was not explained - for example we have recently had Beethoven 6 and 7 over the last couple of years and no such prohibitions were placed on that . Roy Goodman is a HIPP conductor indeed he conducted what was announced as the first performance of the concerto on period instruments ( albeit a performance at traditional tempos ) .

Thus there was an agenda behind that BAL . It should not have been described as a BAL in my opinion but as a personal recommendation from a particular perspective .
Sorry if I came across as rude Barbs - it was more frustration over this apparently never-ending saga.

No problem, though I can understand why HIPPites might have been narked that contemporaneous instrument recordings appeared to play no part in this otherwise excellent BAL .

yes but what I am meaning is that Deca legends series are reisuues(?). and therefore, the recording I am commenting about is the original, before Decca reissued it on their Legends Series.

I think it's a bit more than that!

But, in any case, BBM has answered all, in his post #115. We can all climb back into our boxes and carry on as before!

It was, as you say, an excellent BAL, and it was good to be reminded of how many excellent recent recordings there are. The Lupu is really lovely.

Yes, it would have been useful to have had a serious appraisal of the various period instrument recordings available : he said nice things about the Katin, but was unimpressed by the Lubimov - and seemed unaware of the other performances which might have been considered. I don't really think our Reviewer is a period piano man....

You make sense to me. The Legends issue is boldly plastered with '96KHz 24-bit Super DIGITAL Transfer', which presumably is meant to elevate it from your humbler version.

Yes but it is the same recording ! Just in a different transfer . It is not like say Klemperer's 1955 Beethoven 7 which until the late 1980s was only available in the mono version like the Eroica and Fifth but there was an experimental stereo recording which was then released - so there were two recordings of the same performance.

(PS - Whoops - I initially read that as "onto".... I think my response stands though!)

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
