re msg 30 - supplies may be limited even from other sources. I tried to order from the US site, and for some, not specified reason, I received a message that delivery is not possible to my address. My guess is that persistence will pay off, or one can buy a good condition used CD album from one of the European or American sites.

I'll try again later - though prices may be going up. It was about 10-11 Euros from am.fr, and 13-14 Euros from am.de last time I looked.

Dave, many US marketplace suppliers restrict delivery to within the their own country. Look out for a specific reference to international shipping.

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite works. I have loved it for 40 years or more. I was surprised at the outcome. The recommended disc was a revelation when it was released. I also like the Tilson Thomas complete Ballet with the San Francisco Orchestra. I had to miss a bit of the BAL and unfortunately it is not on iplayer.

We used to sing 'Simple Gifts' at school in the mid 1960s, but I didn't come to AS until the 1980s!

Always loved this music.

The recommended version existed in a previous incarnation on a single CD, entitled Copland conducts Copland: CBS MK 42431. It is coupled with Lincoln Portrait and Billy the Kid (suite). I have both releases; the rehearsal sequence in the 2CD set is fascinating.
I spotted a few used copies of the single CD on Amazon by searching Copland Lincoln Portrait; primary availability is download, but there are also some CD copies. Sorry, I don't know how to provide the link!
I too would not want to be without the music that did not make it into the suite: surely the inspiration for Shaker Loops (which always makes me think of breakfast cereal, along with Quaker Oats!)

The chamber version conducted by Copland though stated as the complete Ballet in its original orchestration, isn't actually the complete work as Copland made some minor cuts for the recording, MTT's Orchestral version of the complete ballet is however complete, also I believe Copland used two extra violins in his chamber recording using 15 players in total rather than 13.

You are right! Both incarnations list 15 players: two additional violins. The liner notes in the 2CD set rather confusingly suggest it is the version for 13 players (even mentioning a double string quartet). The notes with the single CD include a transcript of a conversation with Philip Ramey, in which Copland mentions small cuts made: The only thing I did was to cut a few spots that were needed only for choreographic purpose. I wonder if the reviewer misinterpreted these cuts as those between the original version and the suite, as he did mention choreographic purposes a few times.

Refreshing to hear selections from the three single 'Copland Conducts Copland' CDs issued in 1988 by CBS Records, Masterworks. A wealth of material to hear anew. I see from one of the labels that I acquired my discount copies from Templar Records, off Leicester Square and other volumes from Orchesography, at nearby Cecil Court. I'd forgotten that Appalachian Spring was twice recorded by Copland; in 1970 at EMI Studios (MK42430) and the 'original version' in 1973 ((MK 42431) at 30th Street Studio, NY City.
