Several of the Mozart/ Colin Davis/ LSO sessions were held from 11pm until 2 am so that traffic noise around Westminster Cathedral would be minimal. I remember getting back home to the Watford area, where I was living in those days, at about 3.30am, just in time for 4.5 hours sleep before the 10am rehearsal at the Royal Festival Hall.

Last movt. of 'Eine Kleine...' Is challenging for big fingers too!

So modern and yet so HIPP, our Tony!
I thought this was an instructive and enjoyable BAL, I didn't find any difference really between JS's contribution live and his various pre-recorded analyses in the past - clear, well-informed, punchy, amusing. There was none of the 'let's knock Karajan' (or whoever) prejudice that bedevils some BALs, ditto an even handedness between the different musicological approaches over the history of recorded sound.
The two revelations for me were Barbara B in the Pinnock 'Agnus Dei' - how beautiful was that! - and ...
... the extract from the Jochum performance - wonderful life and lilt in the pacing and style, especially of the orchestral playing (when the choir came in, I was listening only to the dancing strings behind - perhaps not ideal in a choral work, I suppose )
A most enjoyable 40 minutes - and I like the idea of a 24 hour BAL playing ALL of ALL the versions of a particular piece. Now come on Mr Wright, you and your 'immersive' enthusiasms...."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It could have been a top BaL had it not been an "I'll scratch your back..." one with two reviewers in almost total agreement.
