Do please read a few of the preceding messages in this thread, Bbm. The Davis is easily and relatively cheaply available new in CD form. It's just that it has to be an import. It still costs less than I paid for it in HMV a few years ago, and it was only £8.99 for the double album then. Just search for "Mozart great masses davis" at amazon.co.uk, for instance. If you can't wait for it to arrive from Canada, they also have it in stock for less than £14, and you also get the mp3s thrown in with that option.

Now there's an argument relying on desperate measures - seeking to put JS into the non-existent "establishment", Alpie? (In which case, his own recordings of Baroque repertoire with modern instruments, and his enthusiasm for Colin Davis' recording this morning - they're just lures to attract the unwary into believing that he's a fair-minded individual who can appreciate excellence when he hears it, no matter whether it's a HIPP or a modern instrument performance, when really he's as fanatical as everyone else in the establishment - the way he so deliberately lied about the availability of the Davis CD giving his real, nefarious intentions away?! They just can't help themselves these HIPPies, can they: wait a little while and the veneer of balance quickly wears off.)

Thanks for that, Bryn! Duly noted.

Now then; calm down. It was not directed at JS, who was really rather interesting today, but was a more general reference to an attitude that I and others have noticed over a period of time.

But, Alpie - it was JS who gave joint laurels to Davis and Pinnock, deciding on Pinnock only because the Davis wasn't readily available. Aeolie suggested that it should have been "a tie" (which was actually what I think JS would have preferred) to which you replied "Yeah, but Davis isn't HIPP. " If this comment "was not directed at JS", then at whom did you mean to direct it? AMcG?

Indeed. AMcG is one of the good guys on R3, but does have a certain leaning that I thing goes beyond reviewer's balance. But I admit to being a teeny weeny bit provocative.

The complexities of plot and subplot of this BaL result seem to be on a par with the recent Line of Duty thriller (or indeed the result of the Grand Prix last weekend). I had the impression that he was going to recommend Davis and would have done so if it had been available as a CD - which it actually is. Why was it beyond the BBC to do the research that would quite easily have proved this? Presto have Pinnock as lone winner and Davis as Highly Recommended, which was surely not quite the way it happened.

(I have the Berlin Karajan on an old cheapo DG Galleria disc and despite shortcomings mentioned today I think one recording will suffice)

Interesting concept, reviewer's balance Alpie - care to expand/explain please?

Think it's YOUR attitude that's most noticeable, Alpie. Closed and assumptive would be how I'd describe it to others - like to the ones in the 'establishment', if I could ever locate them.

The establishment reference is all mine. If I I assumed wrongly, I apologise.

So can anyone tell me what they said about the Hogwood?

I have a feeling that it wasn't mentioned at all, but I did pop out of the room for a couple of minutes to make a cup of tea at about 9.50, so perhaps it was discussed then.

Do you not have access to the iPlayer?

Maybe Barbirollians has the same problem that I have, living in a remote hamlet that is over 3 miles from the nearest telephone exchange (which uses Victorian telephone wire )- excruciatingly slow Broadband speed, causing the I-Player to crash about once a minute.
