    BaL 22.03.14 - Mozart's Coronation Mass

    9.30am Building a Library
Live in the Radio 3 Southbank performance space Jeremy Summerly discusses with Andrew McGregor different recordings of Mozart's Coronation Mass - one of Mozart's most popular choral works - and makes a personal recommendation. And the stakes are higher as this is the first time that Building a Library has been done as a live discussion.

Those have recently become a specialty of the Cattle Ranchers in the State of Colorado, which has legalized recreational marijuana.
I have the Hogwood version, which was a filler for the Requiem. I think I've heard the Karajan versions which struck me as fairly inappropos.

Do you think the joint reviewers will accidentally disagree with one another, it being """""live""""?

OK Alpie...'Joint reviewers'...'high stakes'... are you trying to elicit more pot inspired jokes?

Perhaps the joint reviewers could follow the Daytime TV Format here in the States and hit each other over the heads with chairs when their artistic opinions fail to concur...

I've only ever had Jochum from 1977 doing the Coronation Mass (with an A list of soloists - Moser, Hamari, Gedda and DFD). It's always struck me as murky in sound - both playing and recording, I suspect.

So I'm definitely in the market for something leaner.

No, my concern is that when we have had conversation reviews in the past, there has been no real discussion, just enthusiastic agreement.

Does ANYONE prefer the discussion format? How do we get the message across that the programme's loyal listeners don't like this format. If reviewers want to chat about music, I'm more than happy. Just let them do it in their own time so we don't have eavesdrop.

It smacks of Grammophone's arrogant journalist editors who consistently ignored the readership for years before we finally seem to have won and got back our much loved format.

I'm wondering how a "live " discussion can work, if the script of the discussion hasn't already been written, along with appropriate musical excerpts.

Just imagine the two of them recommending totally different versions.

It would seem that the best way to avoid that and serve the listeners would be to choose reviewers with different backgrounds. Perhaps one could be more of a traditionalist and one could more of an HIPP Orientation.

Ah! Now that's an idea worth developing - in connection with Sport Relief (which always makes me think of a cricket box), perhaps? David Owen Norris in the red corner and Erica Jeal in the blue slug it out for the best recording of Sibelius' piano Music.

It'd still be better than the mutual enthusiasmfest of the "conversation" format!
