Based on what we heard, my 1st choice would be the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra
as it was definitely the most beautifully RHYTHMIC.
AAM/ Manze and Avison / Beznosiuk ( spelling?) were a bit rhythmically unstable ( but not as bad as either VCM/ Harnoncourt or Il Giardino Armonico).
What a pity that Mr Vickers in his summing up clearly felt the need to award the 'prize' to an English ensemble
( because Haendel was 'English'? ) but I'm glad he at least chose the Australian Brandenburg Orch as the runner-up.
Also, I missed the first few minutes, were any of the ASMF versions mentioned (Sir Nev, Iona Brown x 2)?
Yes, near the start he mentioned that ASMF had recorded the set 3 times but that the first as the best. One brief extract then forgotten. Actually, no "standard" CO versions were held to the end nor recommended, everything he took forward was HIPP.
I actually did not take to the Aus group, far too fast.
I also enjoyed this BAL very much. I have just ordered the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra version. I was leaning toward Manze but thought why not try the Australian group.
The cover is different it has a platform diver on it now your usual classical CD cover.
...apart from no mention of the Hogwood, I missed what he said about Pinnock...was that dismissed fairly readily too?
I understood him to opt for the version of the works just for strings (can't remember the date he mentioned) as opposed to version/s with added oboes etc - which the Pinnock features, apparently.
I enjoyed this BAL but admit to having listened in between dozing after a rather testing week and late night. It will merit another listen.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
