Looking forward to the arrival of my DHM CPE Bach set too...it's got recordings I missed out on first time around and didn't think I'd see again.

I have seen Op6 on their own for ÂŁ6.99 in Manchester HMV recently. I was only able to listen in dribs and drabs on Saturday but was also surprised not to hear any mentions of this performance!

The Hogwood got a terrific review in the BBC Music Magazine:

In his notes to these two justly celebrated sets of High Baroque concertos, Donald Burrows reminds us that ‘the Op. 3 publication is an assemblage, none the less attractive on account of its variety, of various works composed under different circumstances during the previous 20 years... the compilation of the set was the publisher’s and in some cases the ordering within individual works also’. ‘There is perhaps no other music before Mozart’s’, he says of Op. 6, ‘that so successfully combines an accessible musical style with an underlying seriousness of content and construction’. The Op.

The Manze/Egarr/AAM 4 disc set of Op. 3, 4 and 6 arrived from ABC-Culture, Lyon today. A nice touch was the hand-written "Merci de votre confiance". Also included was an "ABSOLUTE SATISFACTION GUARANTEE" in English which contained the delightful phrase "We carry a capital interest in your satisfaction". So it's Mme. Guillotine if they fail to satisfy, eh?

I bought the Manze set after the BaL and enjoyed it very much.

However, on repeated listens, and having listened to the Il Giardino Armonico box-set (which doesn't contain the concerti grossi), I couldn't help thinking that this music could be done with more 'attitude' (as we say these days).

Finally, a couple of days ago I ordered the Giardino set and it arrived this morning.

I know that some people find these guys a bit OTT, but I'm really enjoying this 'kick-ass' approach to the music.

Infinitely Ugh-er than the Karajan set.

I share BeefO's enjoyment of the Manze set (an utter delight and my favourite set of these wonderful works). Shall investigate the Giardinos; a punkier version would set off the Manzes very satisfactorily.

Have you never seen Beefy in his HIP listening gear?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
