I thought he recommended the Manze set? The Pinnock was mentioned in the summing-up if anyone wanted the Oboe side dish (but then so was the Harnoncourt).

But it was difficult to tell - he didn't exactly wear his heart on his sleeve in his discussion - there was one performance that really brought out the bagpipes in the Polonaise that I quite enjoyed (I already have the magnificent Manzes) but I couldn't work out who was playing. He was one of those reviewers who plays an extract then, immediately after, mentions the name of the performers who are going to play the next illustration.

A bit too detached for me - I almost think I prefer supercilious sneers.

I had the same problem...was waiting after the extract to be reminded who was playing, only to find we were going onto the next excerpt. I think the Polonaise/bagpipes performance was probably by Il Giardino Armonico...I agree, it was a lot of fun.

I'm still baffled as to why the excellent Hogwood version wasn't mentioned, especially as it has come out in a newly remasterised version along with Op.3.

It's actually late morning if one thinks about it. 6:00 is mid morning.

I prefer not to think about it.

                      It's on the R3 website.
And it's highlighted in the OP of this thread.
And the Forum is not a place where you should demand to get your own way. You can ask , but not demand.

AAM/Manze, of course. Where they do seem to have fallen down is in only giving the catalogue number of the set with just Op. 6. There is also a 4 disc issue which adds opera 3 and 4 (with Egarr directing Opera 3 & 4, and also playing the organ in Op. 4). The 4 disc set works out rather cheaper, pro rata.

[Currently, I only have the ASMF/Brown (in a Brilliant 40 CD box), so have just ordered the lowest priced "As New" Manze/Egarr box from an amazon.co.uk supplier based in France.]

                          the Hogwood, I think.
Well that was my take on it.

whats all the concern over "Top recommendation" anyway?
Its an artificial construct. Embrace the variety .

Calm down, dear, it's only a review!

I think you might have confused your fellow forumistas, BeefO. Try "Which was the top recommendation?"

I have a gun, and I'm not afraid to use it.

                                Now, in true G&S style,

what was the top recommendation, or which recording came top?
