Well he's one of my favourite conductors for Ives and Messiaen, so I have dug deep and spent my £1.27.

Ditto. Not just ONE but FOUR CDs for £1.27. Never mind the quality, feel the width! :-)

Bart Van Oort's 14 CD survey of Mozart piano works is surely also an outstanding bargain for £8.99!

A wide range of Gardening, home accessories, wildlife and bird care products, outdoor leisure and games.

I already have Brautigam's set....should I get this one as well, Vints?

Well, IIRC, Bart's survey is a little more complete. I caved in and bought it some time ago, though I have not listened to more than a small selection of its content as yet. From what I have listened to, I prefer Brautigam's playing but the Brilliant Classics set is well worth the money.

            Thanks for that Bryn.

AD isn't actually one of my favourite conductors, though I think the problem is that I've heard him in music he perhaps doesn't like so much, or is less effective conducting. Compare Gergiev in Beethoven or Mozart, for example - and I've no idea what he'd be like conducting Bach. [I have heard Gergiev conducting oustide his sweet zone - competent but boring I'd say.]

I have in the last year or two given AD a bit more of a chance, and indeed in some works he is very fine. Now what I really want is some more cheapish recommendations which will count against my Amazon account (probably Amazon or Amazon fulfilled), so I can get free delivery on some low priced cables I'm thinking of buying!. It'd be good to have a few of such ready (saved for later) in my shopping basket to be moved in at the checkout stage for such situations.

As noted by pianorak - not just one CD, but four! I wait with eager anticipation.

I bought the Elgar disc when it came out (1991?) on Teldec for about £12!!!! Did it not get a Penguin Rosette?

I remember the other discs coming out, but they were all full price, so I didn't buy them because Handley et al was available for less expense.

A fantastic bargain, but not for me this time.

AD is weird. I've seen him do an amazing RVW6, two years after he's moulder it at a different gig! I'm working through his RVW cycle at the moment and it's erratic.

... you already know the answer to that, Micky!

I prefer Brautigam's Beethoven survey to his Mozart - but Brautigam is of course always interesting.

The Bart v Oort has the added attraction of using several different instruments - whereas Brautigam sticks to his McNulty/Walter in everything he does...

Ha ha, you know me too well, Vints! Still haven't got the Brautigam Beethoven, I was hoping all the piano music would come out in a single box rather than just the sonatas, but that looks unlikely.

Anyway, think I may have to go for the Van Oort, if only for the different instruments. Thanks to you and Bryn for the wise words.

Haydn: The Piano Sonatas - Ekaterina Derzhavina: 9cd Profil. £14.50 (new) + delivery from a group of Marketplace sellers.

This one's a sleeper and easily overlooked. I have only briefly sampled the set (which arrived this morning) but from the little I have heard it is a joy.

It can be sampled here on spotify- http://open.spotify.com/track/0sTlZNs1Z7MYa5kI38mGYh She plays a modern sounding piano, though a few minutes listening shows some interesting characterisations. A possible for anyone who isn't totally allergic to Haydn keyboard sonatas played on on modern instrument. Some very lively playing in this set.

At the price you really can't go wrong I think. I'd put in a good word for van Oort too, though I know others prefer Brautigam - but his CDs/sets are considerably more expensive.

I think the only Haydn solo keyboard piece I have a recording of in which a modern piano is used is a live concert take of John Tilbury playing the Variations in F minor. I might just go for the Derzhavina.

John McCabe's recordings are good. Krystian Zimerman is astounding in Haydn, even if he does play on a modern instrument. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to perform Haydn too often, and I don't think there are recordings. He played Haydn in the East Neuk Festival in 2013, which was broadcast on R3.

I might also try the Derzhavina.set.

Another early keyboard set is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Haydn-Comple...ustomerReviews Apparently now nla but for 14 discs the Marketplace price still looks reasonable though IIRC I paid a lot less than £33 for it new a few years ago

It's on 14 discs and also gives you a lot of misc Haydn keyboard works. They're played in something like chronological order on 5 'appropriate' keyboards (inc. a clavichord) that advance from a Dowd/de Nagel harpsichord for CD1 to a Broadwood piano for 14.

Schornsheim is well worth a listen in other repertoire too: her recent CPE Bach disc is excellent. She also has a JSB '48' that I'm tempted by.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

That was my first Haydn keyboard works survey. It fired my enthusiasm for Haydn's 'piano' pieces. It remains my first resort, despite the later acquisition of the Brautigam and Von Oort (et al) on CD, and the somewhat gimmicky in recording but well played Tom Beghin survey on Naxos Blu-ray Audio.
