Brilliant Classics are great and reliable, but there have been some incredible amazon deals recently: the DG Bernstein Mahler set for £15.97 just before Christmas and the EMI Messiean box set for about a pound less, to name but two.
I was given the 22 CD Stravinsky set as a present a couple of years ago: it's a good set to dip into, but I'm not sure even I have listened to all the whole thing.
The appeal of the Boulez box is partly in the selection (a good mix of 'pop' Stravinsky and some of his lesser known or celebrated pieces) and partly in the up to date sound, though I have no problems with the sound of the Columbia set, either.
This thread is a boon to me already as I have now ordered the Boulez Stravinsky set, of whose existence I was unaware. Thanks, Mandryka. You deserve Arabella.
No doubt my bank balance would go down further did I not already own the 22-CD Stravinsky set and most of Rattle's Mahler discs. I will give Jansons's Shostakovich a miss as I already have three complete sets!
