Just a little reminder that amazon.co.uk still has the BIS Essential Sibelius set (the contents of some 15 CDs) at £7.49 for the mp3 download.

Maybe a fairly recent reissue, but perhaps worth mentioning - Tirimo's Schubert collection - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schubert-Com...eywords=tirimo

I have enjoyed much of Tirimo's Mozart, though I've not heard any of his Schubert. It is reportedly good.

There is also a cheapish Debussy Preludes CD if you look around. ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Debussy-Comp...eywords=tirimo )

I enjoy Arrau's Chopin; what's his Beethoven sonatas set like? I am quite keen to put it on my list.....? I have Kempff, and a smattering of the sonatas by Kovacevich, but feel drawn to the Arrau set.

This seems a good buy, but which versions are they? Oddly this box has 9 CDs, while a couple of similiar Arrau/Beethoven boxes have 11 and/or 12 CDs. Why the significant discrepancy in the number of CDs?

I have some on LPs. I have also been sampling on Spotify, which again reveals Arrau's Beethoven to be very much worth having, but the sound quality on Spotify is fairly poor in these, so the CDs seem like a good idea.

I have my eye on the Gilels set though it is significantly more expensive.

                    Hello Dave

This is his 1960s cycle. It was re-released in two box sets within a year - the stripped down one above with no liner notes and just the sonatas (now only £18.90) and another one with the sonatas, liner notes, plus the Eroica Variations and Diabelli Variations; this explains the difference in disc numbers.

At 14 quid I could no longer resist the Wand Bruckner cycle on RCA: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bruckner-Sym...=bruckner+wand

It's so good - both playing and recording. A revelation for me.

Ah - so for anyone just wanting the sonatas in a minimal package there's around £20 price difference - less than this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Pi...rrau+beethoven

Do you know much about other cycles by Arrau? I suspect my LPs were from the 1960s.

I believe there was one in the 1980s but I'm not sure if it's still available.

Incidentally, the one you linked to is a misnomer by Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Pi...rrau+beethoven) If you scroll down you'll see the Eroica and Diabelli variations listed on disc 11 and 12.

I don't really think you can point the finger at Amazon - that's what it says on the box! For anyone who wants the variations, plus some notes, £20 extra may be reasonable. Also, you can pay a bit more and get some concertos - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Co...rrau+beethoven on a further 2 CDs.

However, it's not clear (again) which performances are in the sonatas plus concertos box - the date does not give a sensible clue.

The rather wonderful EMI Arrau Icon box contains another cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with Galliera and several Beethoven piano sonatas but not a complete cycle, all from the 1950s I believe.
