This set of 11 opera CDs might be considered a bargain - http://www.selections.com/AL685/one-...text=One%20act though in reality it may just fill your shelves with works you won't listen to more than once, if that. The set contains one act operas, all from the 18th and 19th centuries. The most recent one is d'Albert's Die Abreise which dates from 1898. The performances should be good.

Better value on Amazon and well worth a listen - I find them excellent background to monotonous work tasks!

Most of these works (all but the Mozarts and the Lortzing) I got as LPs. The 3 Schubert operas were also put into a box in the Schubert-year 1978: literally the 3 LPs with their sleeves were put in a slightly oversized box.
Lovely, but not revolutionary music, and this applies to all of these works.
It looks like EMI has recouped the rights, as it was CPO who succeeded in snatching these recordings in the early 2000s.

Most of these performances were very well received in the Penguin Guide back in the late 70s/early 80s.

Good grief - that is (they are) a bargain. I don't know whether to be deeply envious or angry that the library was selling them off

I did feel somewhat shamefaced to have acquired such a haul so cheaply (20p per disc/multiple CD set). Still, at least they're going to a good home! :)

I have no info on transfers.

The set is also available from the same supplier (again fulfilled by Amazon) at Am.de and Am.fr for €29 but given the delivery charge that's only a few pennies cheaper than Am.uk. It is not clear whether the continental sites offer international delivery so I tried the Am.de site and it accepted UK delivery.

Contents list below but unsure why only 94 cds are listed.

It's back at these prices but for how long? Well worth £29 from the small amount of sampling I have had time to do.

I wonder if composer and conductor are in any way related.

For the moment I'm holding off that last 100 CD box. I've been over doing it lately, and even though some of my finances are swinging upwards (e.g some shares going into profit) I don't think I have the time to deal with so many CDs to add to my pile of inwrapped or unplayed discs.

In the meantime, this Everest originated disc of Mozart Wind Serenades is notionally 4p, and with postage £1.30 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...&condition=new It should sound OK, though there is some background noise, including slight hiss and clicks. I have a copy from another supplier. The basic sound quality is pretty good, though I wondered if I was seeing "Everestgate" as iTunes declared the performers to be different from those specified on the cover.

There is also a recording of Brahms 4 conducted by Steinberg with the Pittsburgh SO for 2p - again around £1.30 with postage - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...&condition=new

simples! - 100 CDs - what might a normal CD cost? say £13.75??

                            So - 100 CDs - should cost £1,375.
                            Actually costs - £29.

                            You - and Mrs P save £1,346.

Now what would you - and especially Mrs P? - like to do with this £1,346 you have suddenly acquired???

Not many of these CDs play for 60 minutes plus, and many in the 45 minute category but it's still a cracking bargain full of interesting performances.

Don't whatever you do knock it over like I did - bashed lid and 5 minutes of cursing while trying to restore order

Agreed. Also, although there are some fairly decent performances in the box, there's a lot of stuff that's less than top drawer and in late 1940s sound.
