Order placed - including Mutter's Beethoven, though I may end up with some duplicates, but can't check right now. I know I had some Everest recordings before. The Barbirolli CD (Ravel) could be worth having, also Boult's Shostakovich 6th. Not sure about Schwarz's Mahler, but on your recommendations ... it's only £1.99.

I'm sorry to say the Barbirolli CD possibly doesn't contain any Barbirolli - The Rapsodie, for example, is Theodore Bloomfield conducting the Rochester PO. And, according to the JB soc, JB never recorded Bolero.

Nor did JB record for Everest. The other transfers in the series are good, except for the Mahler 5 (I couldn't get a decent copy) and were made from 4 track copy tapes of the originals.

One of the other Ravels is also Bloomfield, the other two pieces are actually mono not stereo and performers are unknown.

I'm sure they'll be just fine. Ordered the CD because I heard Zhukov play Scriabin at Wigmore Hall a few years ago.

Yes, it's a bargain alright - except have also been shopping at Sainsbury's to redeem THAT £2.50p evoucher and thus saving even more money!

I have the Chopin/Scriabin CD. Happy with it, but I really got it for the Scriabin.

Re Budapest PO and Saccani, suspsct they're good and serviceable, but so far I've not bought any. The repertoire seems fairly standard, so for me not a strong imperative. If you try any, let us know what they're like. I'll do the same if I find anything which attracts me.

I've heard very good reports from Budapest but for live performances, particularly of opera. Good for a short holiday.

I'm developing something of a fetish for BC's box sets, having already bought the Beethoven (£42) and Mozart (£12) editions from the same series. Add these to BC's 60 CD Complete Brahms for £26, and I reckon I've snaffled 180 shiny round things for about 50p a pop. Admittedly, the quality is variable, but there's more than enough good stuff to keep me happy. These sets are ideal for impecunious students, etc., who want to explore the repertoire.

I have that set, Hitch: it cost me £7.77 more, but it was still a bargain! Pity there's no B minor Mass, though; they could've left out the not-so-well performed Easter Oratorio and one of the Organ or Cantata discs (good though these are) to make way for it. Otherwise an excellent start to a Bach collection, regardless of price. Happy listening!

(By the way, the Schubert and Mendelssohn Masterworks are very good, too: the Schubert especially!)

Seconded. Indeed, most of those BC 40CD Masterworks sets are well worth having, as long as the price is right, and even at the £40 I paid for the Beethoven one a few years ago I do not regret (though I have since seen it for around £18.
