As yet, there are no details to be gleaned from Amazon or EMI(!). Most frustratingly, classical music releases always seems to be relegated to second-class status by mass-market online retailers. Less frustratingly, this situation provides plenty of opportunities to prolong this thread.

Speaking of second-class status, today's iPlayer features just two classical entries in the TV section. When is the BBC going to remember its remit and broadcast regularly scheduled classical music programmes? "The Hollow Crown" Shakespeare series is garnering interest. Why not make something similar for classical music? Wouldn't a successful series or three encourage viewers to try Radio 3?

Goodness, too many questions. Sorry, off-topic. On with the motley.

It looks like Ida Haendel is in there ! Although she is strangely simply referred to as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

A sort of contents list for the Boult box below. A great deal of duplication for me - notably the Brahms and Wagner - although it will be good to have 'The Great' and 'The Pastoral'. The Mozart looks interesting but I am not sure about the Bach.

Don't have too many misgivings, hafod; about fifteen years ago Martin Wale (at the late, lamented Seaford Music in Eastbourne) played me Boult's Brandenburgs as an "innocent ear" sample: I was very impressed! Vigorous performances which suggest the performers were really enjoying themselves: "Big Band" Bach doesn't get better than this!

That's helpful to know - thanks. I don't mind 'big band' if it is done well; indeed, I was brought up on it. Should have known better than to doubt Sir A!

Many thanks for these details, hafod!

It all looks extremely tempting - I'm so pleased about the Brahms symphonies, the Serenades, and so much else - woo-hoo!

some of the efforts by the major labels in regard to info etc are lamentable.
While it is true that there has never been better value for recorded music, lots of the listings and info on the cd, in the package, and available to see pre purchase are genuinely hopeless. In my experience the big labels with big name stars are just as bad as the budget outfits.
I won't give examples of poor quality to save boring people. there are LOTS of kids out there willing and able to do this work at minimum wage for a foothold in the business...give them a job !!

The same seller also has a complete listing for the Walton box:

Del boy: “Get in, get out, don’t look back. That’s my motto!”

It's the same info as is on the Presto site. As an aside, I have bought from this ebay seller in the past and have found him to give a very good service. The Sainsbury price for the Boult set is even more attractive!

                          Are pre-release orders generally cheaper?

That has certainly been my experience over a long time with HMV.com

                              Is this any good? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sibelius-Sym...091921&sr=1-17

OK - it doesn't fit "my" £1/CD rule, but Davis in Sibelius might be worth having. I was notified of some deals from the River People - and this was the only one we haven't noticed or bettered in recent weeks.

Also I'm not sure if these are plain CDs or hybrid SACDs. We've run through that before, but SACD collectors might want to check in case these are vanilla CDs. LSO Live does sometimes have both flavours.

IMO: Yes, though I could imagine people preferring the Davis with Boston in these symphonies (without the Kullervo, that is)
