I see that Janowski's Ring Cycle has returned to the catalogue at a very reasonable price (as little as £17.41 inc p & p on Amazon Marketplace):

Even at £25, that set is a bargain, Parry - there's nothing "bad" about it (good cast, good orchestra, good sound, good pacing and balance) and some much more famous (and expensive) sets give "less" of this fantastic Music.

Presumably, this is RCA's attempt to cash in before Janowski's Ring on Pentatone is released. His new Wagner recordings have been rather well received (concert performances). I saw that Meistersinger was broadcast on Radio 3 on Thursday and Friday afternoon, so will try and catch up with those at some point this week. I'd agree with ferneyhoughgeliebte that Janowski's RCA set gets an awful lot right.

I'm another admirer of the Janowski Ring. At that price, it is a mandatory purchase.

Done! This bargains thread is an expensive hobby in aggregate even if unit costs are low....

If I didn't have it already I'd rush to take advantage of this great bargain. It's a terrific set; a Ring to live with, which I've been doing since I got the Eurodisc release in the early '90s. What I especially like about it is that the roles are taken by the same singers throughout (Theo Adam as Wotan/Wanderer; Jeannine Altmeyer, Brünnhilde; Siegmund Nimsgren, Alberich and so on). I got to know and love the set through hearing Act I on radio with Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegmund and Jessye Norman as Sieglinde, an astonishingly effective partnership. Of more lasting significance, though, is that I became familiar with the work of Marek Janowski as a result, pinned my colours to his mast, and still consider him one of the greats.

The market place sellers are cheap, providing you can squeeze your order (from the US or Camada) past HMRC. Actually some of the cheap market place sellers for this item are in the UK, so not a big problem.

It's a tad cheaper from Amazon.fr, though probably not worth it unless you buy more, because of the postal charges - http://www.amazon.fr/Wagner-Der-Ring...7027776&sr=8-1

Conlon's superb EMI Triple of Zemlinsky for £4.99! Another no brainer, I think:

(Sainsbury's seem to be doing all the EMI Triples for £4.99)

Sadly I can relate to that emotion all too well. These days I've come to accept that the buying and collecting is as much of the fun as the listening....
