No, amateur 51, I quickly received a notice of regret, as several other posters did at the same time. The gap between the offer and the actual price was quite substantial. However, in mitigation, they did honour the William Steinberg, 20 CD set, in the Complete EMI recordings series at the generous offer price, subsequently adjusted. Graciously received, too!

Generally, I'm inclined to double check with unexpected sources such as Sainsbury's Entertainment. Recently, I acquired the "Parsifal" DVD/Bayreuther Festspiele/Sinopoli for £17 98, post free, whereas the quotes elsewhere were around £12 more expensive. Same, too, with the Artemis Quartet's complete Beethoven String Quartets, a couple of months ago. Yes, a delay in distribution, but they did honour their initial asking price at around £20 cheaper than I saw elsewhere.

      Thanks for this, Stanley!

I had exactly the same experience as Stanley with the Rubinstein and Steinberg sets. I think that Amazon dealt with it entirely reasonably. I have a quiet smile every time I see the Steinberg on the shelf!

I even smile when I take mine down off the shelf to spin one or two of the CDs it contains.

It is still happening albeit very occasionally - the most recent was the new Pollini 9cd Chopin box for £13.06 which was honoured.

It's not bad value even at the current price - if you happen to want that - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chopin-Mauri...6062884&sr=8-1

I think I over dosed on Chopin recently so not desperate for this one though, but others may like it.

Perhaps the best bargain I recently found in the CD stores was a second-hand copy of the Newton Classics reissue of Charles Dutoit's series of Stravinsky recordings with the Montreal Symphony, 4 CD's worth, for $9.99. Even more of a bargain with the store credit I had from trading in some other CDs at the store :) .

I doubt that anything is likely to beat the 21 CD Real Chopin box which a few of us here managed to get from Amazon for £11.12 a year ago. I must admit I still have not listened to everything in that box.

Go for it Bryn. Break the seal and spin a disc, or are you keeping it as a trophy, or to resell?

No Dave, not "not anything" but "not everything". I have spun all of many of the discs, much of most of the discs, merely sampled a few of them, and some remain altogether unplayed.

I thought the purpose of this thread was to alert other forum members to available bargains. Instead, there seems to be a lot of gloating about bargains received after the opportunity has passed!

To be fair Parry, a bit of both - pour encourager les autres

Members here were alerted to the bargain at the time:

Some pre VAT-rise stuff is on the way:

Highly praised Chopin historical edition: Amazon have surely got the price wrong:

                            ...
though that was a few weeks before this thread was started.

Amazon have now amended the page linked to, but have managed to leave the illustration of the boxed set as the second of the two below the main image.

It was clearly not only a pricing error but the wrong item being offered for sale. I don't know how many of us were lucky enough to get the set at the bargain price but my heart goes out to someone who will not embarrass by naming, but who cancelled their order a few days before it was delivered to the rest of us.

I was one of the lucky few and I'm very grateful for the original alert and a similar one for the Steinberg box - I'm gradually working my way through both & getting considerable enjoyment from them.

Oops. Too early in the morning for me to distinguish between similar words!

I hope you enjoyed what you sampled. I still have too many with the seals intact.
