John, I got the Ancerl on LP in my youth and 'upgraded' to CD shortly before the closure of Orchesography in Cecil Court. Tomorrow morning, when I get work, the more recently remastered "Gold Edition" re-issue should be waiting for me (my having ordered it from Presto during their Supraphon promotion. It is surely the finest recording of the simplified version of the work available.

It strikes me that Antoni Wit is a great artist who has had a prolific and very distinguished career. I saw him conduct the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig nearly 40 years ago. I have only one CD with him conducting, however, and it is marvellously impressive - Penderecki's St Luke Passion on Naxos.

I agree, it's long been something of a benchmark in this work. What tempts me re Wit is that he's done some excellent recordings for Naxos, including that fab Mahler 8 (which I have on BD-A). This one could be a winner, so I'll give ti a go.

I think that Mahler 8 is wonderful on blu-ray audio, at least, in its stereo manifestation - the surround was very disappointing - so I'd be interested in hearing this Janacek.

Yes, Naxos blotted their copybook with the multichannel layer of the M8. The stereo layer was terrific, though. Very immersive.

The original sound isn't too bad, so I'll be interested to hear what you think of the remastered version.

BTW, I enjoyed trawling through the Abravanel Mahler box. Third, Fourth and Seventh probably the most successful, I'd say. Sound pretty good as well.

You lot are bad for me. I flipped down the pages of the HMV website after one of you said that Jonas Kaufmann's Verismo was £3.99 and succumbed BUT......... I bought Haitink's LSO Brahms Symphonies for £7.96 and Mackerras's RLPO Beethoven Symphonies for £7.99 as well. No postage asked.

I have not had a chance to listen yet, but the earlier "Crystal Collection" CD issue was shown as ADD and dated 1988. The "gold edition" issue is also ADD and seems to date from 2002. though the copyright notice is dated 1989 (though that may refer to the compilation rather than the re-mastering). There's lots of detail regarding the equipment and software used by Stanislav Sykora at SR Studio Prague:

DAW: SADIE 24-96 (24 bit audio resolution)
Digital Audio Effector: SONY SDP-1000
Lexicon 480L - Digital Effect System
Digital D-A Converter dCS 900
CEDAR - restoration system.

All tracks timings bar one, and the total time are greater in the "gold edition" transfer than in the earlier "Crystal Collection" CD.

I hope to listen some time on Monday. I will have a look at some of its audio properties too.
