The Furtwängler Rome "Ring" by Membran is at base.com at £13.99 or from amazon.uk at £15.99. The transfers seem fine to me. What a bargain!

Googling around, following your post I noticed this massive box which includes that Ring and might tempt some people (including me) ....get thee behind me......

Do you happen to know the provenance of Membran's transfers? AFAIK, there are CD transfers by EMI (recently re-released) and Gebhardt (more detailed but harsher in aural impact). Might Membran have used one of these sets, or might they have gone back to the EMI lps from the 1970s?

Membran, like most, but not all, reissue labels do not divulge the provenance of their transfers. I used to have the LPs, but these are long gone, so I am unable to compare the sound quality. However, all that I can say is that, even on high-end equipment, these transfers of 1953 recordings sound reasonably good.

Thanks for the extra info . I may well order this Membran release. I have a few of their previous historical releases, which range from the very good to adequate.

I currently own the Gebhardt 53 Ring, which is good in terms of detail but with telescopic sound and light on bass.

I ordered these from Harmonia_mundi and they were here within 3 days - great service and amazing performances. Can't decide which one I prefer. Both are wonderful but if pushed I would go for Ibragimova and Tiberghien.

Complete Mozart Operas

It seems the EMI Celibidache Bruckner we were discussing a while back has run into problems. Apparently a number of buyers report duplications/omissions. Amazon has withdrawn the box until further notice. You have been warned.

Anyone know anything about this Klemperer box - at just over £10 for 10 discs inc complete Beethoven Syms, Brahms 1/2/3 and Bruckner 4/7/8 maybe worth a try.
