I had those recommendable Kuchar recordings as CDs, otherwise I would certainly have gone for this offer.

These cheap downloads are a great way to acquire niche or unfamiliar items which you might not go for at normal price. I have downloaded Brilliant's 20th-Century Italian Piano Music Vol 1 from Presto. Just starting to enjoy discovering lots of interesting and for me totally new repertoire. There must be a Vol 2 but Presto doesn't seem to have it - MusicWeb have a review of the whole set.

Not sure I really need 17 CDs of French Baroque Flute, but it looks like a superb bargain for anyone who does.

Are we being "nudged" into accepting/preferring downloads instead of CDs? At these prices it's starting to look like it.

That'll be fine until there are only downloads, then the price will go up - but hopefully I'll have more than I need by then.

The Zweden Bruckner symphonies survey is at a low download price from QOBUZ. £7.99 (320kbps mp3), £10.49 (CD rate) £14.99 (CD sample rate with 24-bit quantization) for 8¾ symphonies (no completion of the final movement of the 9th, and no 0 or 00).

On Amazon at the moment, for the princely sum of £0.46, a CD of violin and Piano Music by Bazzini, including the Ronde do Lutins. I've bought a copy!

Forum members who can get to central Manchester may or may not be aware of Vinyl Exchange on Oldham Street. The ground floor deals with CDs (vinyl in the basement) and there is usually a reasonable classical selection near the front door to the right. To give an example, last week I bought Anne-Sophie von Otter's Grieg recital for £4. This was recommended in March edition of Gramophone but listed as download only - it is also available as a Presto CD at over £12. The nearby Oxfam store usually has some reasonable classical vinyl LPs and CDs, but the staff have some funny ideas about pricing - I have seen Naxos discs priced at £5+!

Yes, when we visited my daughter at Manchester University I always made a point of disappearing for an hour to Vinyl Exchange.

Now that specialist classical CD shops have largely gone the way of the dodo, which other still extant shops would members recommend to those who happen to be in the area and looking for a bargain?

At that price it's presumably good, I think I have some of the more obvious ones already in other boxes - Sibelius, VW etc., so do I really want to have another box?

I would probaby buy it for the more unusual items - though whether I'd have time to listen is somewhat quesionable.

If anyone has the space and doesn't have many of these, it could be very well worth considering. Are the transfers better than previous versions?
