They're still available at about $35.10. I have this set. I like Holmboe's music generally - well-crafted in the Scandinavian tradition (particularly following on from Nielsen) but am not convinced many of the symphonies show him at his best. He took a while to find a distinctive voice, and I think he writes better for smaller forces and concertos than full symphonies. So I'd recommend symphonies 7-10, but you're better off starting with the chamber symphonies and the last few chamber concertos.

DG's Wilhelm Kempff Edition can be ordered for £135 (including excess charge plus p&p) from amazon.it. Delivery estimate is 1 week. This 80 CD boxed set might be tempting to those, like me, who do not already have a large number of Kempff's DG recordings:

Some VERY cheap Beethoven on Qobuz

Haven’t sampled yet but Gramo very positive about the piano concertos and moderately so about the Violin Sonatas

Listen to unlimited or download Beethoven: Complete Symphonies & Concertos by The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

It would be a lovely thing to have but I have decided on a sterner test for such purchases with criteria:
            1 Have I the shelfspace?
2 What is the percentage of duplication?
3 When will I really have time to listen to it (Bearing in mind the listening queue I already have and the total potential listening time I have left)?

I'm having to apply a similar brake on purchases - particularly point 3. I've had to resist the Barbirolli and Walter box sets - I can find a lot of Barbirolli on streaming - I notice new releases from EMI - ok Warner - on Naxos Music Library for example, which I speculate come from the same remastered box set recordings.

For the same reason I have been consigning books to Oxfam (by appointment, max 3 shopping bag full equivalents). Now they are closed some of the less saleable/worthy books will go into cardboard recycling, the rest stored for their re-opening. (I observed a sixth form volunteer make short work of unsaleable books in the back room of the Oxfam bookshop - covers ripped off, inards propelled accurately to a large bin).

UPDATE. Just listened to first Symphony (exceptional) and third piano concerto (very good). Concertos/Symphonies worth £4 of anyone’s money. Terrific sound and HIPP lite performances

Very minor problem with the folder for Disc 1 of the Violin Sonatas. The cover images and booklet pdf were corrupted in my download. However, the files of the same name and intended content in the other three folders were fine, so all that is needed is to replace those in the first folder with a copy of those from any of the other three.

Just been delivered. What a glut of Beethoven Piano Sonata recordings. Not only the 1950s Mono and 1960s stereo surveys but 24 of the sonatas recorded for Shellac release and the 1960 Hanover recording of the 'Pathetique', 'Moonlight' and 'Appasionata'. Sadly, it appears Wilhelm Kempff never recorded the Diabelli Variations.

Since 8 songs for a mad King was written for Roy Strong to perform (a recording of whom perfroming it I already have) I was surprised to find that the Pierrot players had recorded it with Julius Eastman. It's a very fine performance.

Would have loved to have heard Roy Strong do 8 Songs.

A mentioned elsewhere in this forum, I attended what I think was the premiere of the work, with Roy Stong as the soloist. Sorry, I see it is not currently available to purchase but there is a CD (actually a CD-R IIRC) of Roy Strong performing the work. See https://roy-hart-theatre.com/shop/te...or-a-mad-king/ I have ii somewhere and will try to search it out. However, I have rather a lot of carelessly stored CDs so it might take quite a while.

I see from my Amazon France account that I bought this set in January 2019. I have to confess that I have only listened to some of the performances but at the current price quoted by Vints - rather less than I paid - worth acquiring, not least for BH's Bruckner 5 (and the Feldman).

Surprise, surprise, it was the Feldman which tipped the balance in favour, for me. Bruckner and Feldman go together well elsewhere:
