I concur: occasional lack of sparkle (School for Scandal in particular, I feel) but overall a very recommendable set.

I was going to say exactly the same thing!

There are better performances out there for specific pieces - e.g. Shaham or Takezawa in the Violin Concerto but this is a pretty reliable box overall

This is really bizarre! I ordered the set from PRESTO a couple of months before its official release date last summer only to find it was delayed. A new date was offered which, since it was to be a Christmas present from Mrs. PG meant there was no problem. However, that date came and went. It eventually arrived in October.

I would say that it's well worth waiting for. Fabulous violin playing!

This set of Glazunov symphonies and concertos looks good to me, at the price. I have some of those recordings already - not sure if I need the box - but the price is attractive - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...KL5A1OLE&psc=1 under £17 - currently £16.68.

It's not the only good set, but Serebrier is good in these works.

Also, this includes the free Autorip if bought from am.uk so perhaps a useful bonus for mobile users.

Good to know that the Brahms Hungarian Dance, the Wieniawski, the Szymanowski, the Kroll (especially!) and the Kreisler are definitely not 'pièces courtes'

The Box is £32.81 from Presto, which has a listing of the pieces. I don’t know how delivery costs would affect the final price. Presto also have some of the smaller boxes at what look like reasonable prices - an offer until April.

At the end of this, are the additional pieces on the 16 CD box worthwhile?

That for the 16 disc box is a poor substitute, comprising just track listings, a "Conversation with Céline Frisch & Pablo Valetti + just over 5 pages by Peter Wollny re, Café Zimmermann and the recorded items. Gone, also, are the original cover paintings and their desriptions.

This is often the drawback with bargain boxes, isn't it? Many of us only need the music, but for others, the original artwork and liner notes are all part of the package.

I recently sent the Endellion Quartet's 3CD set of Britten's music for string quartet to a friend, as the CDs are included in the big Collector's Edition box, and hence were duplicates in my collection. I left the booklet in the set I sent as I did indeed think it part of the package. The day it arrived, he took it with him to read as he was having coffee while his wife was at a morning workshop. I haven't checked to see if EMI/Warner have PDF versions of any of these original booklets.

Before Christmas I suggested several mp3 collections at very low prices from the USA.

I wasn't unhappy with the sets I bought. However, it is starting to look as though the US outlet is now on a downward path, and will eventually close. That leaves only a few which I know of. Apparently Berkshire Record Outlet is still operating, though it may have gone to online only.
